the error code i recieve is 0x80072EE2
any help with this would be great cos its driving me batty lol
we both use norton internet security 2003, it was working in past with no problems, but the reason for install was that it was becoming very slow and full.

Have you tried downloading and installing XP Service Pack 2 first?

From what you say, you may already have seen this Microsoft article. Also, you might find some help here. If none of that works, try to get hold of an SP2 CD and get SP2 on to the PC that way. You might still be able to get hold of a free CD from a PC store, but if you can't, you can order one from Microsoft. It's free, but you have to pay p&p these days.

thanks for your reply madeline, but no luck.
i think the problem may lie at my end rather than my boys, i have norton internet security 2003 installed on both machines, both of these are updated, i have disabled xp firewall in favour of norton (i have also tried disabling firewalls, both and still get the same errors) i have sp2 and that is upto date. the 2 pcs are connected via a cross over network cable. i am connected to NTL cable 4MB. and as i said my son can access the internet but cannot use updates or msn, and that is the only problem we have, i dont really want to take the drastic step of reformating my pc and starting from fresh but i think this maybe the quickest option, unless someone else knows better lol
thanks again both for your input
JKF

When you say you have disabled the firewall do you mean you have switched on the PC, exited the firewall and then tried the update? Unfortunately that's probably not enough with Norton. You would probably need to change the setup so that Norton doesn't load at Windows startup then reboot the PC so nothing is running in the background. I would be almost certain than because MS Updates want two way communication with a PC in order to install updates they are being blocked by your own PC's firewall. Can you not connect your sons PC direct to the NTL box and do the updates that way? Also check the Norton Firewall logs on both PCs to see what incoming traffic is being blocked. One of them will almost certainly be Microsoft or Akamai.

Although you have XP SP2, you said that your son has XP SP1a on his PC. I don't know if that would have caused the problem, but I do know that Microsoft will no longer support XP SP1/1a after 10/10/2006. This means that nobody without SP2 will be able to get critical/security updates after that date, so it's important that you get SP2 onto your son's PC as soon as possible.
Microsoft article. SP1 also includes SP1a.
