I have a Compaq Presario laptop computer with XP home installed. The OS is auto updated and I have the Zone Alarm firewall and AVG antivirus.
When I try to rename folders XP freezes and the following entries appear in the Processes list of Task Manager:
drwtsn32.exe and dumprep.exe
The only way to unfreeze is to end one or both of these processes. The folder then returns to it's original name.
Can anyone help with this one?

Both of those processes relate to error logs. Let them finish then check Event Viewer for errors or warning.
Right-click My Computer > Manage.
Click the + to the left of Event Viewer.
Clcikm Applications and look in the right window for errors or warnings. Double-click on any to see what they say. There should be an event id and a link to the MS site.
Do the same for System.
Post back here if you need help interpreting the errors.

The two files you mention are generated by a programme called Dr Watson. The first one is Dr Watson itself and the second is a Dump Report containing a whole pile of data that you can send to Microsoft when a machine crashes. Now the question is, why is it crashing in the first place. Do you get any error messages when this happens? Which particular folder are you trying to rename?

The Application link took me to the Help and Support Centre this was the complete message:
Product: Windows Operating System Event ID: 4097 Source: DrWatson Version: 5.2 Symbolic Name: MSG_CRASH Message: The application, %1!s!, generated an application error The error occurred on %2!s!/%3!s!/%4!s! @ %5!s!:%6!s!:%7!s!.%8!s! The exception generated was %9!s! at address %10!s! (%11!s!) Explanation This message is for informational purposes only. User Action No user action is required.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Currently there are no Microsoft Knowledge Base articles available for this specific error or event message. For information about other support options you can use to find answers online, see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx. The System log revealed a long list of events and there where 4 listed about the right time. But they referred to the DVD burning ROM starting and stopping.
Does that info help?

This crash happens whenever I want to rename any folder. There are no error messages at all.

The Event you listed related to Dr Watson itself crashing. Dr Watson is what should create an error report.
When it freezes, can you do Ctrl + Alt + Del to bring up Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and see what is using the most resources.

dumprep is trying to write the error message.
Can you check to see if Indexing is running under services?
Right-click My Computer > Manage.
Click the + next to Services and Applications.
Click on Services and scroll down to Indexing in the right pane.
Right-click on it and select Properties. Is the service started? Is it set to manual or automatic?

Hmm. That's that theory gone then.
Have you tried a system restore?

This is not a new problem so even if I had system restore turned on it wouldn't help.

Off topic: It is a bit dangerous to have system restore turned off, it has helped many people get out of problems on this forum alone.

I have heard that viruses can hide in the saved files and actually run from the stored files so I diabled it.

It's true that if a restore point is made while your pc has a virus and you system restore your pc to that time , then yes the virus will be active. But if for example your pc is free from infection to-day , you will not be infected from a virus hiding in a restore point. My advise would be to make sure your pc is clean then turn on system restore. I can guarantee at some stage it will get you out of trouble.

I use it almost weekly, not always to fix a problem, often just to revert some settings that I have changed, make life very easy when I have forgotten what I have changed. It has also saved me from doing a re=-install of xp more then once. I would strongly recommend, as would most of the forum users here, to follow FifeFlyer advice.
Anyway, I have hijacked the topic. Sorry, I won't post here anymore.

It's a bit of a myth that clearing the Prefetch Folder gains you speed, but on this occasion it may help you.
Look here for instructions to clear it.
Do you have a Windows disk? If so, put it in the drive.
Clcik Start > Run and type sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc.)
Press enter and let it scan for missing or corrupt files. You get no confirmation messages and it just ends.
See if that helps.

Thanks for that but unfortunately it hasn't worked either.
This problem only affects folders I can change the names of files OK. Even when I open a new folder I cannot name it. It just stays as New Folder(X).
Weird!
The only way I can change the name of folders is to open my ftp program and use the rename within it to change the name.
XP Home came with my laptop so it's an OEM version and impoverished Microsoft won't help and Compaq ignored my email. I'll try again with them.

I haven't given up. I've been away.
Try taking ownership and see if that works. Have a look here

Hi Cavaleiro,
I have got allmost exactly the same problem. Only difference is that it happens on trying to change the properties(target) of a link. After editing two or three letters, the properties window freezes, like all input buttons, too. There are graphic errors on the desktop, too. (Moving a window leaves a 'Comet tail', mouse pointer passes underneath the properties window, etc). Killing the DrWatson unfreezes everything, with many of the tray program icons missing. System log shows starting and stopping of a CD-Burning service I cant connect this last one with the context at all- but exactly like you describe , too.
Sorry that I cannot give you any finished solution; I think only that using one of the registry cleaning progs like RegCure, Error Doctor (both freeware) or Registry Repair Pro could perhaps help about Dr. Watson's sense of humor. Cannot give any recommendation about a particular program , have never used registry cleaners till now.
Second seemingly good idea is replacing a evtl missing or corrupt file like described in this thread, from an XP Install-CD by RitchieP ( has a cute avatar, Btw:). Third possibility is a repair installation: (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm)
I understand that for these last two options you need something your PC manufacturer didnt give you - an XP CD
My feeling is, the problem is more probabbly the registry than a missing /corrupt file, though. Anyway cant try all this out till friday evening-am 600 miles from the PC right now. If you allready have a solution or find one, please post it here. I am going to do the same in the lucky case I find it, too.
Cheers, Tihi
