Hi I've been using this pc for months & is XP PRO. Today i turned on the pc & on the blue welcome page that appears before the desktop, i get a message saying this is not a genuine Microsoft product & 2 boxes asking wether to resolve the situation or deal with it later, also a blue star in the toolbar at the bottom.
What will happen if i click on "resolve now", will it delete the edition of XP i have. All seems to work ok, i bought the pc off someone on ebay & i'm wondering what i should do! Gaz

You will keep getting reminders and they won't go away until you buy a genuine version of Windows.
If you inform Microsoft of the person/organisation who sold you the PC/Operating System you may, I said may, qualify for 'special' treatment.
The good news is that you will continue to receive critical updates from Microsoft.

Am wondering why it's taken so long for these reminders to start, i've been using this pc for months without notification of a counterfeit product! Will it affect performance & access to internet! & OE etc & how come i'll still get updates if it's counterfeit! Could it be spyware causing this? Gaz

Why have they allowed this, why didn't they stop the updates and say you get what you deserve?

This particular method of trapping 'counterfeit' copies of Windows has started recently. It is not spyware, well, it is spyware but of the nicest kind.
Performance will not be affected and Microsoft consider it important to issue critical updates to prevent the spread of viruses/worms and the like.
If you know who supplied the OS and you want to 'shop' them, tell Microsoft.

I should have also said that there have been a number of instances where genuine versions of Windows have been flagged as pirated. If you think your version is genuine, contact Microsoft.

You have just posted here, that is not going to stop you posting anywhere. Don't think I understand your question.

No of course not if you save it all before you re-install.

You will be nagged constantly until you get a genuine copy of XP Pro. Have a look at this Microsoft article. Madeline.
