Boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when the computer starts up. Choose Safe Mode and let it start up. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and set your system to a time before this started.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Thanks for your help. Yeah i tried that not too long ago and the only restore point available was for 08/03/06 and this happened a week ago. I tried it anyway but to no avail.
What should I try next??
Thanks again for helping me

Yea it's all good to start up in safe mode. Yea I thought restoring it would do the trick but it happened a week ago and I didn't have any restore points before that. My friend did something to the computer but can't remember and when I tried to go on after her, that happened.

See if anything shows up in the Event Viewer.
Right-click My Computer > Manage. Click the plus to the left of Event Viewer then Application and System to see if anything shows in the right pane. Look for a cross in a red circle, named Error. Double-clcik on the Error to see if you get an error code and more information.

Hey my friend tried to fix it and bunged it up. I now can't boot into safe mode anymore. I tried to reinstall WXP and all was well until it restarted after the formatting and the copying of files and came up with the msg "diskette drive 0 seek failure, primary drive 1 not found, strike F1 to continue or F2 to run setup utility".
What should I do now?? Do you think I should just wipe everything on the drive with gdisk and reformat it and install WXP again??

If you're happy to do that it would probably be the quickest way out of your problems.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

What exactly is 'gdisk'? In order to reload Windows you need either a Restore CD or a Windows XP CD. Most PCs these days come with a Restore CD that you use to boot up the PC and which then turns the clock back to the day you bought the PC. Do you have such a CD?

sorry gdisk is a program that wipes everything on the drive and makes it ready for formatting using a floppy disk. It's a better version of fdisk. Anyway i fixed the problem about the "diskette drive 0 seek failure". I was looking in the BIOS and saw that it said I had a floppy drive installed when infact I don't have one. So I changed it to "not installed" and it boots fine now into the OS. The only problem I have now is that it says "primary drive 1 not found, press F1 to continue". So now i have to press F1 to get to OS. How do I fix this??

Thanks again for your help. I solved that problem with the "primary drive ! not found". I changed the boot order to CDRom first then the HDD and it seemed to boot alright without that msg.
