Please help. (Windows ME) After an all-clear from HJT, my display setting refuse to change from large, Safe-mode type appearance. I've tried altering the setting (colour / size etc) within "Properties", along with the recommended reboot, with no luck.I've even tried to "restore" to an earlier point, but get an "unable" notice. Many thanks Dave

I would guess you need to re-install your graphics drivers.

Go to this page and download SIW. Run it and down the left hand side you'll see an item headed Video. Open that which will give you chapter and verse about your video card or chip. Come back with that information and we'll find the correct driver for you.

Thanks Graysts I've now managed to re-install my graphics and all seems well, however I can now longer get on line on IE6 or Outlook. In addition I keep getting the following error message - SMC SMC has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL SMC will now close. and the following blue screen message - OE:0028:C140E6BC, and then the computer locks up. If I atempt to re-set my broad-band modem this Blue Screen error appears again. I have tried a System Restore, but the system wont restore. Thanks Dave

SMC is the Systems Management Console. What do you mean by re-set your modem?

Thanks Greysts What I mean be re-setting my modem is - pressing the very small reset button on my Webstar (Blueyounder / Virgin Cable) broadband modem box. This action is said to reboot the modem itself and check for any cable or connection faults. After about 30 seconds the power,pc,data and cable - "healthy status" LEDs iluminate. Hope this helps Thanks again Dave

I haven't rebooted my VM modem since I got it over 2 years ago. It shouldn't be necessary on a regular basis. Can I assume you are using a USB connection to your VM modem?

Thanks Greysts yes I am using a USB connection to the modem. My re-boot of the modem was a "clutching at straws" action. Thanks again Dave

The reason you are having all the problems is because you are using USB instead of ethernet. USB was never designed for networking applications, it doesn't work properly and uses a huge amount of resource. Virgin Media and NTL before them have always said that you should not use USB.
Uninstall your current dial up connection and switch off the PC. Unplug the power lead from the VM modem and remove the USB lead. Connect the ethernet cable to modem and PC and power up your modem. Wait a couple of minutes and then switch on the PC. You should be connected to the net.

Thanks Greysts unfortunatly I only have USB ports - No ethernet port. There is a small telephone type port at the rear of the computer, but I believe that is for a dial-up connection rather than a broadband connect. After numerous attempts I have now managed to get back on line to write this reply. Could the problem lie with the way the computer and modem identify and respond to one-another? Thanks again Dave

Get yourself one of these. You need to get rid of USB before going any further.
