i want to backup my email messages from windows mail to an external hard drive:
1. what is the easiest procedure to save both inbox and sent messages.
2. how can i know what size the 'inbox' and 'sent messages' folders are so i can see if there is enough room om my external drive to perform the backup?
many thanks for any advice given.

You can identify the size of the mail boxes by going to their ‘normal’ location. It is a hidden folder named C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders then Inbox, Sent Items, etc.
To copy them in Windows Mail, use File > Export > Messages etc. and direct the output to your external hard disk.

many thanks burrwalnut.
when i tried to export my inbox to external drive, i selected format as 'microsoft windows mail' as i use that program other than outlook. then i selected inbox and the destination folder on my external, but immediatly the dialogue box saying 'export has failed' came up suggesting there may be corrupt files or not enough space (there is plenty of space)i'm trying to export. there are 1,000+ emails how could i identify which were causing the probs?
is there any other way of archiving these mails by copying and pasting the files directly to my external?

Firstly, try exporting locally to, say, Documents and then copy that to the external drive.
If that doesn't work you could try copying the 2 'boxes' directly from the store folder to the external drive.
