I must admit I am absolutely furious right now. I downloaded the Vista SP1 update and now my pc is totally silent. I have tried unistalling and reinstalling the soundcard drivers, updating them, rolling them back...ad infinitum - but the pc is silent. My speakers are virtually new and they are not the problem (tested them). Yes I have checked that the sound is not muted and gone through all the settings, and re-booted the pc after every change of setting. It would appear that this is one of a number of 'bugs' in Vista SP1 that users are aware of - but there would also appear to be no resolution to the problem either. I have a Realtek High Definition soundcard that came as the installed card a year ago. Realtek released a driver update in the last day or so and I have tried that too - with no joy. Does anyone have any idea as to how I can resolve or workaround this? Or......do I have to wait for Microsoft to pick up the gauntlet?
Any help with this would be much appreciated. (I've even considered uninstalling Vista SP1 - but would that cause even more grief than I have now?)

Realtek audio drivers are a problem and is the reason you would not have been offered SP1 via automatic updates or windows update.
Offer of... free support...from Microsoft , although i think it's now down to the driver provider.
Sorry i can't be more positive.

One way I have heard some people have found round it is to uninstall the sound card drivers then download SP1 then reinstall the sound card drivers from the manufacturers website. whether this will work for you I don't know?

I did have problems with Vista SP1 on X86 32 bit - I found that simply unplugging the speakers from the rear of the pc sound card sockets and then plugging it back in brought up the Realtek High Definition output socket configuration utility. Once the speakers were remapped as appropriate (in my case "Front speakers") the sound worked immediately.
I have also upgraded to Realtek High Def driver version R1.89 before installing Vista SP1.

Here's what I did - I GAVE IT UP. I am no techie. I installed SP1 - only took TWO HOURS - and voila, no sound. Read all night trying to figure out what went wrong. Then realized it had something to do with the RealTek driver. So then I agonized over how to uninstall the RealTek driver and then reinstall one but CLUELESS about what driver to install and afraid I'd never have sound again. How would the average person know this? So - in desperation (and fear) I restored my computer to the day before I installed this abortion called SP1. So I don't have SP1 but I DO HAVE MY SOUND BACK, and I'm going to leave it at that. So my Windows Live OneCare is on Orange Alert all the time - WHATEVER. I hate Vista. It is for I.T. people. I've had to restore to the basic point (like it was new in the box) three times in the past year. I will leave SP1 alone. I have spent HOURS trying to figure out this mess - I mean, we are entitled to SOUND on our computer in 2008, are we not? Yet Bill Gates gives us this junk that somehow renders some audio drivers MUTE? Next time my computer fries (which M/S WILL DO every few years), I'm switching to Mac. I am completely disgusted and will never buy another M/S product in my life. What was so wrong with XP anyway? NOTHING. Not for the average user. Eat your billions, Bill. This is the final straw. I've hated Vista from Day One.

I've had the same problem... downloaded SP1 and lost all sound, plus lost my search indexing completely. I restored back to before installing SP1 and hey presto... everything's working fine again!

Well, after agonizing and stamping my feet, I finally got it all sorted out. It appears that the the SP1 update resets everything to a 'flat' state, so you have to go into the Realtek control panel and mess around with the Sound Manager and in particular the Analogue panel on the right - there is a YELLOW FOLDER which you click and then ensure both connector settings are checked (It failed to work when one or other of the boxes were unchecked). I then also clicked on the advance settings link at the very top of the analogue panel and checked the option 'Mute rear output device when front headphone plugged in' (I haven't tried it with the other option checked). Then I restarted the pc and - voila! sound came back. I updated the Realtek drivers to the most up to date one, went through all the motions as mentioned above and - voila! Sound is back again. TBH you will likely always have to go through the motions of resetting everything when you have a Realtek Driver update. ---------------------------------------
As an additional but possibly important note, for anyone with Vista and a Realtek Soundcard who can't 'RECORD WHAT YOU HEAR' - which is standard facility for XP and most other soundcards - I have found an excellent toolbar that bridges the gap and does it all and more besides (without putting added crap on your pc) and best of all it's free, see here: http://www.freecorder.com/freecorder3/index.php?src=uk.search.yahoo.com It can be installed on IE and Firefox and has many other options at your disposal, you will however have to re-install the toolbar should Firefox have an update. I have spent countless frustrating hours talking to the techies at Novatech about the inability to 'Record What You Hear' on my own Vista pc with a Realtek Soundcard connected, and they say the fault lies with the crappy soundcard that does not have the ability to record sound (like streaming radio for example). The solution is to either upgrade the soundcard (which is a must in the near future) or find the missing link - which the Freecorder toolbar provides. A lot of the free desktop recording programmes do not work as they do not have the missing component.
I hope that helps anyone else with the same problem.

Thank you BUT I am too afraid to do ANYTHING at this point. I'm staying in the pre-SP1 mode until either I pay someone $200 an hour to come to my house and upgrade to SP1 and fix this RealTek mess or - I hope to GOD that SP1 doesn't install autmatically and I never hear another sound out of my speakers because I just cannot relate to what you are telling me. I don't even know where my RealTek control panel is - and I know you're trying to be helpful, but I am too non-savvy to even attempt to do all this stuff. How do I know which RealTek driver is the one I'm supposed to choose for my pc (a Cisnet, whatever that is - you sure get what you pay for). I'm freaked that I will chose the incorrect one, download it, then my entire computer dies or something. If I ever do find the Realtek control panel and "mess with it" (what a scary thought for someone who is already clueless) - that could be the beginning of the end. I don't know what I'm doing. "Analogue panel" What? If YOU got frustrated with this issue, you've got to know how I feel. I'll tell you how: I liked my IBM Selectric III typewriter JUST FINE. I am still steaming at M/S for putting out this update that "flattens" (whatever that means) out my drivers - I never knew the term "driver" until a week ago. THIS IS AN F'ING NIGHTMARE. I do appreciate your trying to help us/me - but I'll be 61 years old in an hour and a half, I grew up with manual typwriters, and this is all WAY OVER MY HEAD.
Honest to God, I cannot even find my Realtek control panel. WHERE IS IT? I right click on the icon at the bottom of the screen - no control panel there. I am losing my mind over this
