Thumbnail pictures not coming up

I have all my photos stored on an external hard disk which is connected to my wireless router. However, recently (the last couple of weeks) when I look into the folders, all the thumbnail pictures come up briefly, then disappear.

Any ideas how I can get the thumbnails working again? I'm using Vista Premium edition.
