vista and windows media player
      #369862 - Sat Oct 27 2007 12:05 PM

Just bought my shiny new e machine 4220, very impressive but although i can rip cds in, i cannot play or burn them back out of w m p. error message COOD 11B1 comes up. I have looked in microsofts web sites and it seems a lot of people have the same problem with vista My drivers are up to date and there are no new downloads i am running vista home premium. I have downloaded winamp and have no problems with that.Is it vista or wmp?

Most of the Vista problems arising from burning are caused by a small number of specific manufacturers. What is the make of your CD/DVD burner?

I’ve looked that model up on Google and sure enough there are problems with it and Vista.

Have you tried burning in both WMP and the Media Center?

What other email programs do you have?

Has Windows Mail never worked or just started misbehaving?

Just tried it with Media Centre and it says it cannot detect a cd in the drive. I can play cds in wmp and install them into the library but then cannot do anything with them. Winamp is working fine but i really want wmp as my default. My other e-mails are google and fs mail which are working fine.I have tried several times to uninstall/reinstall e-mail but with nojoy.Just realised i put a cd in the drive and it didnt recognise it but it will play a dvdWindows mail has never worked i have followed instructions putting in pop3 and smtp but error messsge server cannot be found comes up every time. When i try to burn in wmp it actually does burn to the disc but will not play back it says wmp encountered problem while playing file for assist go to web help.

System restore is out of the question as reading between the lines, your problems have been with you since you purchased the machine.

Here are two things to try. Create a system restore point first, just in case you have finger problems. I'm not very optimistic with either but I think you should try them :-

1. Have a look in Device Manager for the optical drive that's misbehaving. Right-click and uninstall it, reboot and let Vista find it. If that doesn't work, have a look at the upper and lower filter registry key removal, here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us

2. If you are ABSOLUTELY certain that your email address details are correct, run the system file checker (sfc) from an elevated Command Prompt, i.e. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then ‘Run as Administrator’. Type sfc /scannow (note the space) and press Enter. This may take some time and you may have to put the Vista DVD in the drive. You can analyse the SFC log file, here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228/en-us

Number 2 above may cure both problems if they were caused by corruption.

BurrWalnut Thanks for your advice . Not quite sure if i am brave enough to try what you suggested with the registry but i have got 90 days from my first post for help with e machines so i am trying them. Its free advice and seeing i bought one of their machines i think they should put it right if it is some thing i am not confident of doing.Thankyou for your help i am sure i will be back on sooner or later for help.
