I've got an Acer Aspire 9300 laptop which came with Vista Home Premium pre installed and no back up/reinstall disc, question is is it possible to make a DVD backup disc from the installation already on my computer that could reinstall the OS in the event of a total failure and how would I do this.
Cheers,
Tony.

Apart from cloning your drive, no.
All is not lost though :-
1. You may have a recovery partition on the hard disk that can be used to set the laptop back to factory settings when Vista is misbehaving beyond repair.
2. Make sure you know your 25 character product code and the precise version of Vista, e.g. Home Premium OEM or Ultimate Volume License (sic). Using the correct DVD (a friend's perhaps) and your product code you will be able to reinstall Vista. It's not the actual DVD that is important, it's the Product Code.

Thanks for that, I regularly back up my files to DVD but I wanted an OS back up as insurance in case of something like hard drive failure, I believe their is a recovery facility on a concealed partition but its not a lot of use under those circumstances, is it possible to do a reinstall off the concealed files if things get to bad to carry on with the original, I'm completely ignorant of how this works, trouble is my friends who have Vista seem to be in the same boat as me, no original disc, but in case I come across one where do I find my product code.

To reset your PC to factory settings, you press a specific key (or key combination) as you switch on. You then have to go through the 'painful' process of updating your programs, e.g. Windows, Anti Virus and the like. Don't forget to keep making regular backups of your data.
The product key can be found on a sticker on the outside of the computer. It is made up of five groups of five characters.

Sure you can. Just go "start -> control panel -> Backup and Restore Center" and indicate your DVD drive as backup destination.

The original question was this Quote:
is it possible to make a DVD backup disc from the installation already on my computer that could reinstall the OS in the event of a total failure
The correct answer was given, no you can't. Using the Vista Backup and Restore centre will not help.
