This is a strange thing. We often rent DVDs to play on the PC as we don't have a TV. The last 2 we had wouldn't play on any media player. They both were copy protected, but this hasn't been a problem before. I thought it might be caused by a recent update on patch Tuesday this month, so I removed the update, but it made no difference. This doesn't happen with DVDs we've bought - they play perfectly. We normally use WMP10, but the rented DVDs won't play in Real Player either. Also, Power DVD came up with an error message about our TV output card not being right (I should have made a note of the error message, but I didn't, sorry!). The thing is, we haven't got any kind of TV output card, so the message didn't make much sense to us. Has anyone got any idea what we can do about this? Any settings we should change? I should say that we couldn't copy DVDs even if we wanted to; we haven't got that facility on this PC.

It could be a codec issue, have you any installed?

We were told that Power DVD did that job. Anyway, it's very odd, we got a DVD from the shop yesterday, it was one we'd seen before and it worked OK then. It still does, no problem at all. Do you think I should download a package from Microsoft or K-Lite?

Go for the K Lite Codec pack and see if that solves the issue, however if you have a different disc of the same movie, it says to me that it was the original disc.
I used to rent from BLOCKBUSTER and sometimes the odd disc would play up, they have a feature where you can report any dodgy discs when you send them back, does your rental company offer this facility?
I think it's one of the negatives with renting, as the person before you might not treat it the way they would if they owned it.

Thanks, I'll try the K-Lite codec pack. I take it this won't conflict with our existing programs such as Power DVD. We've been watching DVDs on this PC for well over 3 years now and haven't had this problem before which is why I wondered if it was due to a recent update. We've also updated to Java 1.6, is this likely to have caused this problem?

No it won't conflict. I don't think the Java update is the issue either, like I said earlier I think it was more the disc than anything else, unfortunately as you don't have a TV, it's difficult to test it on another DVD player.

Thanks for your help and advice, Mouse. I'll have to try one of those DVDs with K-Lite installed and see if that solves the problem; annoying having to pay to rent it again though!

It's only from a local shop, so they might let me have one again for free, just to test it, but they usually only charge £1 or £2, so it won't break the bank! I got the K-Lite Standard pack as it said that one "would be enough for the average user". Was that the right version to get?

Are you aware there is now a WMP 11?

Yes, of course I am! I'm also aware that it's about a 24.6MB download, which would take me the best part of 2 hours on my dial-up connection (can't get BB). For the use I make of WMP, it's not worth bothering unless I have to eventually; I use it mainly for watching DVDs and occasionally plying CDs.
