The new Microsoft Office 2007 saves files by default using the new docx extension. These files cannot be opened using older versions of Office.
(Although you can still choose to save your files in the old .doc form)
If you need to convert Office 2007 files, you can download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007
Note before installing this program make sure you have downloaded all the Service Packs for your Microsoft Office Program. You can get these from http://update.microsoft.com/

You can also convert docx files to doc online, without the need for Microsoft Office at all at.
