Windows Vista and XP Tweaking Guides
      #376042 - Sun Dec 16 2007 12:25 AM

Windows Vista and XP Tweaking Guides, to quote the website "is the complete system optimization guide for Windows users. Designed for novice and advanced users alike, it is written in plain English to help you genuinely understand all aspects of Windows and your PC."

I'm had a look through them and they are detailed, well written, 172+ page PDF guides to both Windows XP and Vista.

I am very impressed. They are clearly written, up to date and superbly presented. I can't believe they are free. They must have taken weeks to write!

If you prefer some quick fire tips, try this Ultimate Windows XP performance tweaking guide

If you're going to mess around with the registry, you may wish to read this MS article beforehand.

Good point Mouse, always take a back-up of your registry before you mess with it.

I'd add that a PC that is behaving and working as it should, should probably be left alone. Those registry tips are for people who like to tinker!

I was very impressed with those guides. I just did a quick scan of the Vista one and found out how to do something that I just couldn't find anywhere else - reduce the amount of space allocated to System Protection. Just knocked mine down from 10gb to 1.8gb and got over 8gb of hard disk space back!

If anyone is interested have a look at Page 30 in the Vista Guide.

The command line is

vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=900mb

where

/For=C: is the drive for which System Protection is enabled
/On=C: is the drive containing the Vista system files
/MaxSize is how much space you want to allocate. It must be in multiples of 300mb, be a minimum of 300mb but more realistically be around 2gb.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.
