Get a bird's eye view of your home!
      #371333 - Thu Nov 08 2007 07:05 PM

A lot of you will have heard of Google Earth, but have you tried out Microsoft Virtual Earth? It gives you an amazing birds eye view of much of the residential areas of the UK in a series of aerial photos set at an angle.

To see what I'm going on about, visit http://maps.live.com/.
Click 3D. You are invited to download Virtual Earth (Beta).

It takes about 1-4 minutes to install and installs a Virtual Earth icon to the desktop. Also it works best with a reasonably high spec PC with graphics card. It runs fine on my AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ with 1.0Gb RAM, NVIDIA GEForce 6200.

Next search for an area you want to view - postcode is best.

Use the zoom buttons to zoom in pretty close to the area you wish to view.

Then click Bird's Eye.

Depending on your connection speed it may take a while for the map to appear. On my 8mb connection it takes about 6 seconds.

You will know when you are viewing in Bird's Eye View mode as you suddenly see a rectangular photo area appear on the map.

Zoom in on this and prepare to be impressed.

You can rotate the image to see all sides of your property or land.

To see a larger area of map, close the left menu.

If you want a preview, have a look at this.

It's good, but it's still out of date, my house doesn't exist on this or Google Earth

It's a pity that Google and Microsoft see the need to compete in this area of computing. They are both paying two different companies to fly the world taking photos of the same thing. In my area Microsoft happen to be more up to date than Google but no doubt one of Google's planes will be over soon. Of course, what they really ought to do is link up with the US Government who apparently have satellites up there that can read my car number plate when it's standing on the drive!

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

I'm not having too much success yet. I downloaded the 3d thing, and I now have a red page (where the map should be), zooming out I get a globe, zooming in nothing. I'll go back and try again.

Yes, I'm ok now. I've just had a look at my static caravan which I sold last year and it was replaced soon after. yet it still appears on the site.
