May I suggest an in-depth article about the on-going increase in spam levels?
Over the years I have, as have many others, noted with sadness the number of spam messages getting through despite the use of filters on whichever program is employed.(Fairly useless IMO) The majority of people are aware of "Mailwasher" and similar downloadable programmes but even they tend to become less effective in dealing with the problem when the increase is so large.
Therefore I ask, is spam ever going to be controllable (20 years or more hence) or are we condemned to be eliminating it from our inboxes for ever more AND in increasing quantities?
To make this question personal: Probably due to my taking part in 12 forums on the 'net my email address has been trawled and in the past 6 months spam messages have increased from 20 to 60/day on average. It is therefore why I have 5 different email addresses but it fails to diminish the quantity of rubbish.

I don't get any spam at all, and I don't use any specific program to stop it. I am a member of a few forums forums too, but if there are settings to prevent me receiving email then I use this.

Like Heidi I didn't used to receive any. Then stupidly I opened an e-mail which told me I had won a free laptop. Even my granddaughter said "Oh Grandad - you didn't..." Since then the deluge.
Googlemail is pretty good at sentry-duty but it still arrives in one's 'spam box' which needs emptying from time to time.

In all the years of using the 'net I have never (with my hand on my heart) been tempted to open a dubious email. The saying that is repeated often on here is "If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!" is one I adhere to all the time.
But returning to this thread: My question is still, what IS the future of spam? Are we to be bombarded with ever increasing possibilities and numbers of rubbish messages? We do have the opportunity to stop nuisance telephone callers AND in some cases rubbish snail mail but what about the wonderful wide web?

I think it's doubtful that getting rid of spammers will ever happen. These people get slimier by the minute. Have you read this? If they can now get through the "captcha" systems, then what hope is there of stopping it entirely.

You are right Peter, the subject needs research and a carefully put-together article. When our editor Claire was deputy-editor I seem to remember she was often on the look out for article-fodder. Perhaps she could ask a staff member to do it.
Or I'm sure if she received a well reasoned piece from a subscriber she would be pleased to publish it.
I sometimes think that maybe, if we all pay a small amount per e-mail; or perhaps the Chancellor could put a tax on them. The bill for a private user or a small business need not be much and it might deter 'spammers' who I feel sure could be traced by The Inland Revenue. It amazes me that 'spamming' is cost effective. Real people never read them - except for gullible grandads who think they've won a laptop !

Where does that lead to.............? Thats ONLY 12000/day, 438000/year on average, nothing really to concern ourselves about!
Those are the ones we know about!
Plus IF these cretins are getting through the encryption it bodes ill for the future!
I wish I had the computer knowledge to attempt building some kind of shield!
