Hi, I am considering changing my BB provider to Sky, their 2MB service combined with the Sky TV package and a Phone deal works out to around £38.00 a month. This seems a good deal as I currently pay AOL £17.99 a month, plus £37.00 a month for Sky TV plus BT for my phone calls.
For £38.00 you get a 2MB broadband connection, Sky TV and their phone deal which includes free evening and weekend calls.
Its seems a good deal to me as I only ever surf the next and read my emails, I hardly ever download anything.
Does anybody have any experience of this package, particularly Sky BB

I can recommend Sky, we haven't had any problems with it. Router package arrived promptly by Parcelforce, as we had opted for self-installation. Took 10 mins to set up on day of activation.
We are on the up to 8mb package, with tv and evening/weekend calls. Our subscription is £36 a month as we have multiroom and Sky+. We find the £5 a month package is ample for us, we are not heavy downloaders and just use the internet for general surfing and emailing etc.
good luck.

Hi we have the 4 mix free evening and weekend package and the top up to 16 meg broadband (2 xbox 360's 2 lap tops and 2 pc's). Beware you only get 16 meg if your phone line will take it. We also had problems with the stability of the broadband line but eventually after numerous phonecalls (one lasting 5 hours) we have got it sorted and are very happy with the connection though we only get a 1 meg connection but it is fine to run all the equipment we have. Much better than Virgin Media and the customer service is also better.

I have just moved to Sky BB from NTL/Virgin. I already had the SkyTV family package at £21 per month, now with BB added it's just £26 per month. I had been with NTL for 5 years or so, paying them £25 a month just for broadband, I don't download music or films, so, for just £1 a week extra I have TV AND Broadband. So far I am very happy with SkyBB, surfing seems much quicker and no suddenly going off line, as happened regularly with NTL/Virgin.

Well I have taken the plunge and signed up. The BB set up equipment and router came very quickly and they have given me Jan 24th as the day I go 'live' I'll let know know how it goes!

Good luck with it Tony. I found the instruction disc would not play, it loaded and got as far as the welcome page then froze. So I just followed the instructions in the book. I hope your computer is more up to date than mine. I didn't have an ethernet port so had to go and buy an ethernet card and insert it before I could get on-line. Also, although on-line 'wired', haven't gone wireless yet as have had to order a 'dongle' (or whatever it's called!!) from e-buyer as this old 2001 'puter is not set up for wireless....grrrr...didn't know that till I started the set-up. I phoned NTL/Virgin Media to cancel but still have to pay for the next 30 days, another £25 what a con, they have had enough from me, glad to be rid of them.

Ellen, do you really need to go wireless with your PC?
If your router and PC are next to each other, it's really best to stay wired. You will only need to use wireless, for other devices like consoles, laptops, media players etc.

well Mouse, my main phone connection is by my front door, my computer is in the living room, along a passage way at least 10 yards away. At the moment I have the wiring trailed along the skirting and around 3 doorways. I do have another phone socket partway along the corridor which has a loud bell and my bedroom phone connected in it. I just don't want any more wires trailing so thought it would be handy to go wireless. Also I intend getting a laptop, which will of course be wireless. I also still have NTL cable going around the living room, through the wall, across the passage all around my kitchen ceiling and out through the wall...grrrr...I need to remove that but it's been tacked to the walls, AND about 15 yards of this horrible green snake tubing across my garden (laughing here, this sounds such a mess but I want to get rid of all this wire and cable)

Ahah, that's fair enough, just thought someone had told you to go wireless that's all, but now I see why.
NTL don't come and take the cables away do they?

Nothing was mentioned about removing the cables when I cancelled NTL. They just said they would disconnect me and I would have to pay for the next 30 days as notice. Wonder if I could sell the NTL set top box on eBay??

No they don't remove the cables. Quote:

You could try but it wouldn't do you any good. First, the box belongs to NTL/Virgin Media and you signed an agreement to say you would return it when you cancelled. Second, when VM connect you to their system they check that the MAC of the modem matches their records.

I was joking about ebay, did you notice the winking smiley?. I just looked and there are several on there and of course they won't sell. They are welcome to the box back if they wish to collect it. Do you by chance have shares in Virgin media greysts? I ask because I've noticed you never seem to want to hear a word against them and defend them however dissatisfied some customers are.
just wondering

If I did have it would be my business not yours.
I defend them from a technical point of view because their infrastructure is far superior to anything the other providers can offer. A connection that requires a considerable amount of electronic wizardry to force it down a copper wire that is probably 40 years old or more and was never designed to accept such a signal cannot compete with brand new fibre optic cables that were designed for a specific purpose.
I don't defend their pricing structure. If a user would rather pay less for an inferior product then so be it but don't be surprised when that product doesn't deliver what it promises.
When you see an advert that says 'up to 8mb' but the small print doesn't mention that your house would need to be in the telephone exchange car park to get anywhere near 8mb I'm quite pleased that I pay for a 4mb connection and that's exactly what I get.

Just remember when setting up your wireless network to use some form of encryption, especially if you are anywhere near other people. We can see at least a dozen other wireless routers from our home. Half are not encrypted and I suspect that the kids are staying up all hours and connecting through the non encrypted routers! Ours is encrypted using WEP (BAD IDEA)... upgraded to a new 'n' series router and it's not only faster and greater range, but the encryption is now set to WAP. WEP takes 45 seconds to hack. We love the speed and range of the new router n series (vs. b or g, etc.). Amazing difference considering it is running the same power.

Welcome to the forums User and thanks for your advice. I haven't gone wireless yet, still trying to get my head around it . The router is ready for wireless as the light is on. I will get my grandson to set it up I think and do the neccessary encryption. I get a good connection with the ethernet and may stay wired for now and go wireless when I get a laptop. I've already messed something up and lost all sound... ...hey ho! All the sound settings look ok though, can't imagine what I've done.

An update.
My Sky connection is working wonderfully well, no problems at all...so much faster, staying connected ALWAYS and all for a fiver a month! I have bought my new laptop and the wireless connection was made in a couple of moments. The problem I had with the sound on my desk top PC was of my own making, I discovered. When I reconnected the wiring after inserting the ethernet card, I happened to place the sound wire into the headphone socket!!...DOH!!..I know, stupid of me, but I discovered this on checking the back of the tower. Now everything is running so smoothly, I can't believe it!
Wondering how Tony G. is getting on with his Sky. Waiting for his update too.

Sorry, just been busy busy busy.
Yep, Sky BB installed very quickly and up and running. I wouldn't says it much faster than AOL but it is faster. I am currently getting 2.5 mb on Sky and was getting 2.00 mb on AOL. I know Sky say its up to 8.00 mb but I guess its where I live.
Having said that the connection is great, the speed suits me for what I do and I like the way you can just launch your preferred browser without signing on to Sky, thats something you had to do with AOL.
The email takes a bit of getting used to - its basically googlemail dressed up, but its like any changes, you soon get used to it.
so overall, apart from saving me money, I am impressed with the service and glad I made the change to Sky.

Now all you will need to do is back up all of your important data and format your PC, there's no other way that you will completely get rid of AOL's malware.
