My daughter needs to buy a new laptop for her University course to use Autodesk 3ds Max with a budget of around £800 if that's realistic for what is required. The software and hardware requirements are link.
I would appreciate thoughts/opinions on suitable machines which I assume would need to have a 17" screen.

How about this. It seems to have everything you need. The major advantage is the fact that it's loaded with Vista Business which makes it a whole lot easier to use business software like Autocad.

Thanks greysts, I wouldn't have known what specs to look for to run that, much appreciated and within budget too (whose budget is something else entirely)

Just double check that she's not using the 64bit version because that needs something really powerful to run. I have to say that Autocad would be far better on a desktop system with a much larger screen. Trying to run it on a laptop won't be easy.

I agree that a desktop would be a better option but as she is in halls and has to travel to the University a laptop would seem to be the obvious solution and of course she is being advised by her tutors as to what she should use.
I have given her the link to this thread so that she can at least read the comments here before making a final decision.
Thanks again for your input.

I hope she appreciates the 750 quid you are about to lash out!! Or is it one of those deals where you lend her the money and then when she's got rich and famous designing new skyscrapers in Japan you get your money back.

The system requirements for Autodesk 3ds Max are not that high, you can easily get a very good 17" laptop for under £750. You should try and get one with a decent graphics card with dedicated memory. You could try this site which tries to make your decision easier by searching out good deals.

Can I ask why you resurrected this thread when it was already over a month old and finished? Do you have some connection with the web site you've recommended?

Sorry, didn't notice the date, I assumed the thread was current because it was only 3 or 4 from the top of list. I didn't realise it was a month old.
