Hi,
As an initial stab at some Linux based web development I have created a website called Tip Top Ideas and would appreciate your comments.
The site was developed on Ubuntu 5.04 in PHP4 with a MySQL4 database (my host only support v4 of each). I have tried to use CSS layouts which has been an education but ultimately rewarding. I have found Quanta to be a very usable development environment for PHP.
As a programmer design isn't my strong point but hopefully I have produced something that is functional yet reasonably pleasing to the eye. Any feedback is appreciated.
Cheers.

There's nothing I can usefully add to what's already been said. I like your site, it's easy on the eye, easy to navigate and you've got some great tips there. It's in my bookmarks now! Madeline.

Many thanks for your comment folks, it's nice to know I'm on the right track. I'm currently in the process of trying to build up the content and promote the site.
If anyone has any tips they would like to add please feel free. All you need to do is register which is free.
Cheers!

Most of the major search engines crawl www.vhit.co.uk at least once a week and adding your url to vhit is the lazy mans way of having it picked up and crawled by the likes of msn etc .

I like the site, but Google Ads get more clicks when they integrate better with the site. Taking out the border around them may work. When its believeable that the links are genuine content, thats when people start clicking on them.

And if the ads are disguised as just content then the terms are being broken and can lead to the closure of the AdSense account. They must be distinguishable as ads.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their comments and to WebUser for making Tip Top Ideas the Readers Website Of The Fortnight.
Part of the review stated "with a little promotion, Tip Top Ideas will quickly generate interest in the online community". Given that I have little or no budget for promotion does anyone have any cost effective ideas to promote a site such as this?
Thanks in advance.

Having had my own website to promote (in the same way, with little or no money to spend, so google adwords have to be kept to a minimum), here are the following tips I've picked up from other sites. *Post about your sites in other forums, without spamming as this is considered bad etiquette. *When posting, make sure that your signature contains a link to your wesite. *On your emails, include a signature with a link back to your site *Open accounts on tites such as digg and then link to your site, some users also open accounts on myspace with the same end. *Look at offline methods of promotion such as word of mouth, leaflets (although they can cost!) *Create a press release and use a press release website to publicise your nesw *Look at link exchange websites as a means to promote traffic between like minded or complimentary website.
The best site I've found for hints and tips is at http://forums.digitalpoint.com/ which has a very busy community of like minded website developers and publishers. Hope that helps Phil
