I've been trying to get this right for a few months, but think I'm about there so any comments/suggestions etc would be very much appreciated.
www.dontdropthebaby.com
Its a website for slacker parents, or those about to be & was done because we couldn't find any sites that looked at the funny side of being a parent, they were all really serious.
The only thing I want but don't have is a forum, but that's because we had one before but the activity rate was poor, parents of young kids just don't get time - either that or it was crap Not sure how you overcome this really, maybe wait for higher traffic before starting?

Here are a few first impressions about the site. Apologies if some seem harsh. It's not my intention - I'm just being honest.
1. It's a bit hard on first viewing the site to see what it is called. The site heading of "dontdropthebaby.com" looks a bit lost. I can see you have had to share the top header with a banner ad, which gives less room to play with, but to me it doesn't look finished.
2. It looks a bit off balance having the "breadcrumbs" type links and the search box right at the top of the page, above even the page heading / banner ad.
3. It'd make sense to have the "dontdropthebaby.com" in your header as a link back to your homepage - though I can see you have done that via the "home" link in the very top-right corner.
4. I find the text size hard to read. I don't wear glasses or have problems with my eyesight, but having large amounts of text on a page in small type is offputting, for me at least.
It is a good site though - lots of interesting and varied content, well laid out, looks professional, is easy to navigate, the colours are balanced and look good...
By the way, this forum is really good as well for site feedbacks: http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12
All the best

Jim - first off thanks for taking the time to look, and for being honest - constructive criticism is what I was after
I used Mambo to do the site, which covers a lot of what you've said because it's an 'out of the box' template I haven't tampered with. I spent too long trying to tweak various aspects of html & css in Dreamweaver, and not long enough on content before.
Given what you've said I may hunt round for a template that I can include my own header image in - the banners ads are only for pages on the site so they're easily lost. TBH I just thought it was a bit too much text so added them. A new template would also solve text size.
Also, given what you've said I'm going to consolidate some of the menus down so there's isn't quite as much.
Cheers for the comments though, very useful & much appreciated. Sometimes you stare at something for so long, you forget how you wanted it to look in the first place
