site about my home town
      #37301 - Sun Jan 25 2004 03:26 PM

I have created a website using webplus 8, which I have uploaded on to the net. Its at http://www.ellesmereportonline.50megs.com

Its basically a site about my home town of ellesmere port, not loads there at the mo, tho im working on it, hopefully it ll be back bigger n better.

One thing I was wondering, the home page will take a while to load up on dial up, as a lot of the link buttons are graphics based. Is there anyway of reducing loading times without compromising on the basic layout of the site.

Also how can I convert the pictures I have on the photo's page in to thumbnails.

any help, feedback much appreciated...though be nice to me, this is my 1st attempt at a web site and well, no doubt Ill learn by my mistakes.

Hi Michael,

First I would say that you should make the subject for your post something other than just "my website"! ;-)

I've just been to your site and I must say it looks really good. I'm on dial-up and yes you're right it does take a while to load up. However once the first page has loaded up, subsequent page loads are quite speedy as the graphics that cause the initial slowdown have been loaded from my computer's cache.

One initial criticism, is that the text on the buttons are not very readable in that grey colour. I suggest you need something a bit brighter, perhaps a bright yellow?

Cheers, James

Very nicely designed site to look at.

If I may say though it does seem a bit on the slow side (even with 512kb/s). To speed up surfing through the site you could try using frames for the navigation(left) and main(right). I assume you have used a web authoring package so you'd have to look that up. You could visit www.w3schools.com/html/html_frames.asp and make your own, you don't need to do much coding (writing html) for you to put your pages into frames.

To resize pictures to thumbnails, the easiest free program I can think of is irfranview ( www.irfranview.com ), which can do lots/batches of pictures at the same time as well as changing imgage extentions, quality, size, etc. I recommend! Good luck

Hi Michael,

Do NOT use frames! They are one of the biggest pains around on the net! Have you ever got stuck in one and had to close your browser to get out of it? :-)

BTW, well done for changing the name of this thread! ;-)
