Its reckoned that only 10% of people use 800x600 these days and that in turn means you are alienating 90% of your userbase by having so much empty space on either side .
If you widen your layout to 1024x768 then the vast majority of your userbase will have less scrolling to do .

I read a report earlier this year (BBC, I think) which said the numbers were (then) 84% - I guess after the Xmas PC buying/upgrading is taken into account that could very well be 90%.
However, that was tempered by another statistic in the report; that 75% of those users who had screens 1024*768 or greater didn't have their browser open to full width, but narrower (equating to between 800 & 900 pixels). Users stated ease of reading narrowing columns as a primary reason. (I would agree that wide text columns are more difficult to read on screen.)
I guess that's why the BBC site is the way it is - and successfully so.

Being a camper and caravanner, a website owner and as the username suggests, someone who has viewed many websites good and bad, I think its an excellent site. As both an owner of a website, which similarly to yours seems to have a good deal of blank space (beyond my current control as its a template and my web building skills are at the moment limited). The blank space irritates me far more as an owner of a site than it does as a viewer. To be honest I didn't really notice until it was pointed out. I hardly think its going to alienate viewers as they will be far more interested in the content than picking holes in blank spaces. If it were my site I would be proud.

I like your site, it was easy to navigate and clearly laid out. Although I use 1024x768, I didn't notice any spaces as I keep my sidebar open, but I don't think the spaces would have bothered me anyway. I'll pass the link on to my daughter, she and her family go camping and there are some good places on your site for days out as well.
