Favicon Creator - Can people please test it?
      #37505 - Mon Jan 26 2004 09:35 AM

I have written a new favicon icon creator and am still ironing out the bugs.

Can you try and create a favicon and see if all is ok? The tool works better with square type images.

I just tried this and it worked perfectly . I'm really chuffed cos I don't know much html and always wanted a pic on favourites, and now I know how to do it (and it was so easy). Definitely putting your site in my favourites. Thanks for that, really like it.

I can confirm that it works when you bookmark my site, but shouldn't the icon also appear next to the URL in the Address bar also?

I haven't tried it yet (I haven't got a suitable image), but I am interested. What does the site actually do? I thought that creating a FavIcon was simply a case of putting a graphics file called FaveIcon.ico in the same directory as your homepage.

Rob

The tool simply converts another image into a favicon.ico file. You then place this in your website folder (at the root) and that is it - a nice little pic will appear in the future on favourites list etc.

Takes two seconds to do. Just a quick, simple tool to do the trick.

Hope you enjoy once you use it

Regards
James

You do have to add a tag to your HEAD section of your website's HTML:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">

Inneresting.

I've created Favicons for several sites in the past and never inserted any additional code. They work just fine.

Well I didn't know how to do this until this thread came up. When I created my one using the site, the installation instructions said I had to add this tag in the header!

Seeing as you know more about this than I, shouldn't the icon also appear in the address bar as well as in the favourites menu??

I've never used the tag either in any site that I've built. As long as the favicon is in the root directory of the site the browser will see and use it.

To all - adding the tag is purely for backwards compatability etc.

That is all. Probably in 99.99999% cases, it is not needed.
