I have some photos on my website which are ENORMOUS and need shrinking. I remember reading in WebUser about a free site that squashes the size of pictures but, despite reading through my old copies, I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone remember or suggest where I can find free software that will do this Really Easily.

Like you I'm sure I've read somewhere in this forum or in the magazine about file compression but like you can't find it. I've done some searching and came up with THIS it may be of some use to you.

You can use Microsoft Photo Editor to do the job. Just load the photo and then use Image, Resize. I normally set all mine to 800 pixels wide. Once resized, just save the picture.

Was the one you were thinking of this one? I think it was in WU a while back, I made a note of it saying 'to save space on hard drive & for faster e-mailing. Scroll down a little to where it says 'crunch here for free.'

Why use online? If you want to do this regularly, grab a free image resizer. The one I have which is easy to use, and clean of spyware is Batch Thumbs from Harmware.
Ignore the word "thumbnails", I just reduced a full size digital photo I took, from its original specs of 1280*960 and 333 KB, down to 800*600 and 81 KB at 70% quality. The output file looks perfectly fine for posting at a web site.
Added plus is since this is a batch thumbnailer, it can create an index page for you, with the HTML output for the web page.

And, of course, there is MY old Favourite, Irfanview (freeware), which can batch resize for you

Don't forget you've already got quite a few useful functions in Windows Paint. A lot of people seem to overlook this.
Go to Image, Stretch/Skew and enter a percentage, making sure you use the same value for width and height.
