I have a problem. Every time (or almost) I go on the net, a wierd file downloads itself either on the desktop or in the Windows root directory. It's called ~. Honest - just ~. No idea what this is, and no idea where it comes from, but it's always the same size - 597KB.
What it seems to do is to a) disable autodisconnect when I log off and b) check the 'Never dial a connection' box in my internet settings. OK, so this is fairly easy to rectify manually, but I'd rather it didn't happen.
Whenever I delete it (which I've done a few hundred times), as soon as I close the PC down, I get a blue screen with the error messages 'The volume that was removed had open files on it' and 'The file system mounted on the volume had data that needed to be flushed'.
This is really annoying - what is it and how do I stop it happening? Please help!

Thanks, guys. Oh, and happy new year.
The only things is that the article makes no reference to the weird error messages I get. Do you think that the ~ file the cause?

I had come to conclusion from previous post to leave ~ alone. Was I right?
