Hello everyone,
Firstly apologies but I'm at a complete loss and not understanding anything I read on forums about this subject...
The landlord chose sky broadband for the house and we have to suffer...the netgear modem (old white style one) they provide is not giving enough coverage and keeps dropping off signal in wireless so I am trying to use linksys WRT54G wireless router to hopefully get around these problems and get a better range and less drop off. First, is that possible?
Secondly, I connect the sky modem to the phone line and ethernet from sky modem to the Linksys router and then try to connect...the problem is my computer will connect to the wireless router but not connect to the internet.
If anyone is patient enough could you post a step by step guide on how I can get this to work...tried to read about DHCP and got very confused etc.
Sorry and thank you to anyone who can help! Griff

As far as I'm aware, Sky don't provide modems, just Netgear routers. They have their own firmware installed and they won't give you the settings to use a different one.
Going back to the original problem, have you tried changing the channel the wireless is broadcast on? Is it sited near a body of water, eg fishtank, radiator?

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Thanks for replying...I've got the username and password from what's hidden inside the netgear router...I think I just want to use the linksys to improve the range of the rubbish netgear one and hopefully eliminate dropping off so basically not as a modem just a router for the netgear router if that makes sense. Tried channels 11, 6 and 8 and no joy and no fishtanks around...thanks for the advice though!

So you're connecting the Linksys router, into the Netgear router? You need to find out how to use the Linksys as a repeater rather than a router if that's the case.
Have a look here

Ahh ok...so that would explain it...I'm trying to do the wrong thing. Guess I'll try and track down some instructions for using it as a repeater only and see if I can get anywhere.
Thanks!
