      #386106 - Mon Feb 25 2008 10:37 PM

This may be a silly question but as i have unchecked the broadcast network via my router manager although i can see it via my own network adapter is this correct that i can see it and no one else?

Do you mean you have disabled 'Broadcast SSID' on your router? That in itself isn't enough to stop a determined hacker. Just because it isn't being broadcast doesn't mean that someone couldn't find the name using the right software. Have you also changed your router Admin password and set up WPA/PSK or WPA2 security?

Hi Greysts yes i have changed the network key to wpa what my question meant to say was i have disabled the ssid and am assuming that my neighbours wont pick up the hub name when searching for available wireless networks.i know that with the right software and experience it is not impossible to find but your ordinary joe wont see it although it is still visable to me.hope this makes sense.ta

Yes you're right, the normal 'drive-by' neighbour won't see your network on their own wireless PC's. To make it that much more difficult for your average 'nosey neighbour' I would also change the network name. For example, all Netgear routers use the default name 'NETGEAR' as the SSID in their routers. If you do decide to change, it would be easier for you to re-enable SSID Broadcast, change the name, re-connect your own PC then stop the broadcast again.
