Hi all,
Can I ask for some advice please.
Myself, I'm on VirginMedia for broadband and have a wired network, using the Surfboard SB5101E cable modem and a TP-Link TL-R460 cable/dsl router. With cables run to four locations. Am well pleased with the set up, with smashing speeds etc.
I've now been asked if I can set up a similar wired network at me ex's so that two daughters and son can use the same means of access at their house.
Thing is, they currently have TalkTalk Broadband, using the SpeedTouch 330 adsl modem. As the Speedtouch doesn't have an ethernet socket, I was looking at the possibilty of getting another TalkTalk compatible modem, the SmartAX MT882, which has sockets for both ethernet and the phone line, as well as usb.
If I was to connect the SmartAX to the phone socket, then run an ethernet cable from the SmartAX to a TP-Link TL-R460 router, then cables to the individual lasptops/pc's. Will this work? Or is there a way around it?
Everything worked smoothly on my own system, but not had any dealing with TalkTalk's services. For instance, would it still require the use of their software or anything else of theirs?
Am very much new to this kinda thing and would really appreciate any help and advice.
Cheers,
Terry

As long as the internet connection from the Talk Talk modem works OK you should have no problem setting up another router in the same way.

Cheers for your reply RichieP. Sorry for the delay in getting back, spent yesterday in hospital.
I've been having a good look around and think I'll probably stick to one of the more comonly known brands that TP-Link, and also go for the combined modem/router. Bearing in mind they are asking for wired connection, I've been having a closer look at the Netgear DG834.
Have you heard anything about them, good or bad?
Regards,
Terry

Netgear are decent products and setting up the internet is fairly straight forward if yoiu use the setup wizard.

I have a SmartAX MT882 and the book says it will only connect one computer, either with the CAT 5 connector or the USB. I've tried the USB and can't make it work. It seems to be only a modem, not a Router/Modem. Ed.

I think the original poster is aware of that, hence the question about which router to buy.
