Hello
Not posted in about six months. I hope you can help me though.
I have just set up a wireless home network ten minutes back and it works. Hooray, but the first thing I want to do now is to stop any thieves in my street jumping on my network for free. I haven't got the slightest clue how to stop people from doing this, heck, they could even be doing it now for all I know but I'm not having it if they are. I'm working on my laptop at the moment but if I have to do it from my main PC there is no problem.
I have already had a look at a couple of threads in this forum for fear of anyone repeating themselves, but it just doesn't make sense to me what I need to do. I have heard the term WEP before, but I just don't know where to begin.
Can anyone help me please? Just a simple walkthrough will suffice. The clock is ticking as we speak and my network is open.
Thanks
John

Belkin Wireless G Router, bought from PC World this afternoon. Doesn't have a model number nowhere on the box or device, sorry.

It's not working now anyway, I can't connect to my network from my laptop. I installed Sygate Personal Firewall and now it can't connect so I'm uninstalling it and just sticking to the Windows XP firewall.
Then I'll have to see what the score is.

Did you get a full manual?
It's available online here
64 bit WEP is adequate for a home network, though you may want to go for a more complex one if you are confident you know what you are doing.
It starts on page 49.

I can't get onto my network now anyway. It's just gone off. How can it be working one minute and then not working the next?

I'm being paranoid here but could anyone have already hacked my network and theoretically changed the settings without me knowing?

I'd be surprised. Uninstall whatever it is to connect to your router. Restart and plug it in again. Let it load up and see if it finds the network again.

I've been having a similar problem with mine recently, particularly at startup. There is a service that keps checking for the bset connection, which means it can lose the current one.
Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
Click the plus sign next to Services and Applications, then click Services.
In the right-hand pane, scroll down to Wireless Zero Configuration, right-click on it and select Properties.
Set the Startup Type to Manual, and click Stop if it's running.
See how it goes. If this makes no difference or you can't connect, re-enable it.

Thanks, I'll try this tonight. Still no joy, I just can't get it working. I bought the router last Wednesday, it worked for about two hours and nothing since. It's now Monday.
