Hi All I have a Belkin G+ MIMO 108.2g wireless router which is connected to the phone socket in my living room at one end of the house. I have a desktop PC and a wireless printer in an upstairs room at the other end of my house and the signal up there is very poor (1-2 bars usually, 3 at best). I have tested the signal upstairs in the room directly above the living room and in the one next to it using my laptop and the signal is quite good in those 2 rooms but I can't move all my PC kit into either of those rooms as they belong to others. My plan is to put the router in the kitchen up high, probably on top of a cupboard out of the way as this is the middle room of the house so my question is this: Is there a maximum length of phone extension cable I can use to move the router? Someone told me that if I put the router on a cable longer than 10metres then it won't work but I don't know how reliable this info is. If this is the case what would be the next 'plan of attack' as I only have one phone socket in the house and I am out of ideas.
Thanks in advance, Chezza

If you think about, BT use wires that are several miles long to convey the signal to your house so a few extra feet shouldn't make a lot of difference. However, BT use good quality copper wire and you need to make sure you get a similar quality extension lead. Don't go for the cheap and cheerful option from one of your large friendly DIY stores but try to find a specialist shop. Try to get a kit with 6 core wire and proper extension boxes. What sort of distance are you talking about?

By the time I have tacked all the wire properly around door frames etc, I would probably need to extend it about 15 - 20 metres. Would I be able to get a good quality cable from somewhere like curry's? Someone has also suggested that I try an ADSL cable but he said it was an expensive option. If I decide to leave the router where it is, is there some sort of signal booster available that I could buy to improve the signal or would that need to be plugged into a phone socket too? Thanks again for your help

20 metres is no great distance. I would try and find an independent electrical retailer rather than Currys. Not quite sure what you mean by an ADSL cable. Yes you can get repeaters for a wireless network.

Sorry I have not replied sooner but it's been a busy week! I went to a small, independant computer shop today and he sold me an ADSL / Broadband lead which cost £18.99 and is 20 metres long. I hooked it up to the router and presto! Everything works!!! Thanks ever so much for your advice I really do appreciate it. Now I have the unenviable task of setting the router up in the kitchen and hiding the shiny new black wire as best I can somewhere! Thanks again for your help

Glad your up and running. Just tell she who must be obeyed that it's all part of a grand scheme that will result in an entirely 'new look' kitchen.

Well it has definately changed the look of the kitchen as there is now a nice black cable running along one side of the kitchen and my mother nearly had heart failure! She has been placated with the promise of having the kitchen redecorated yet again though Thanks again for your advice
