I have a laptop running wireless and a desktop connected by cable to the router. I can get up to 6.0mb on the laptop but can not exceed 1.8mb on the desktop. I have eliminated all progs at start up and also tested the cable. Any advice???

I use he DSL Connect UK test. It's been consistent in its measuring. I check early in the morning when I get the best speeds of 6.0mb on the laptop and 1.8 on the desktop. Throughout the day and evening, the speeds on both reduce which is expected.

Have you tried removing the laptop from the router and testing the PC on it's own? I would reboot both router and PC before trying this test.

Have already tried the desk top on its own while laptop powered off. No change. Have also powered down router etc and powered backup and still no change. Laptop runs O.K when I connected it to the router via cable which proved cable was ok. I was wondering about the network card in the PC.

Network cards run at either 100 or 1000mb, far faster than anything you'll get down the line. Even the really old ones run at 10mb. I can't think of anything obvious but it's worth checking that DHCP is enabled on the PC and it's getting the correct network address from the router.

O.K. Just thought there may have been a fault with the card. On your other suggestion, what is DHCP? and how do I check it?

DHCP is shorthand for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Fancy words which basically mean that instead of getting an IP address from your ISP it's provided by your router. Right click on the two little TVs in the System tray and choose Status. Choose the Support tab and tell me what is says against Address Type, IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.

O.K. have found something under TCP/IP which may help.
Address Type Assigned by DHCP
IP Address 192.168.1.3
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1

I was hoping you might have found somethng. As for security, all I have is Windows security centre with Firewall and AVG Antivirus. The laptop has Vista and the desktop XP Home SP2. I've done all the necessary with ADWARE and SPYBOT so I'm really at a loss. It's as if there's a governor on the desktop which prevents it exceeding 1.8MB.

As a last fling could you try this one on the PC and see what you get?
One other thing springs to mind. Go to Start, Run and type in CMD followed by OK. At the DOS prompt type IPCONFIG /ALL (note the space) and tell what comes up. Unfortunately you won't be able to cut and paste unless you can do a screen dump.

The only differences I can find between your setup and mine are in the 2 lines 'IP Routing Enabled' and 'Node Type'. For the first mine says No and for the second mine says Unknown. What difference does it make - I haven't got a clue!

Do you think it's worth trying to change mine? and if so how does one go about it?
I've looked at the same thing on the laptop but it's so different. I wonder if I connected the cable to the laptop what effect that would have on the readings. As it would be running direct rather than wireless would it give different readings do you think>
Anyway, all your help has been much apperciated.

I thought you had already tried changing cables around? If your router is still sending out a wireless signal whilst also connected via ethernet to another PC there is every possibility that the two will show a different speed. I was under the impression that both PC and laptop were connected by ethernet. You need to switch off the wireless signal and then run the speed tests.

Sorry - What I have done is taken the cable from the desktop and connected it to the laptop with no change. I assume that by connecting the cable to the laptop it would use that connection and not the wireless??
Also, have tested the desktop with the laptop switched off so again assume that the wireless connection is inactive and the desktop speed is still low.
Sorry about the confusion with the connections. Laptop is wireless and desktop cable.

What I need to know is if the wireless transmission from the router is, in some way, overriding the ethernet connection. That's why I suggested that you go into the router setup, disable the wireless output and then try your tests on the two machines using ethernet cables for both.

Well it looks like I may have cracked it. I did some searching on the Internet and came across DRTCP. I downloaded the program and ran it. It came up with some suggestions for tweaking the system. The main one was to increase the TCP receive Window which I have done. The result is I've actually got to 3.omb o the desktop so have exceeded 1.8mb for the first time. Will do other checks in the morning and see what I get.

O.K. the maximum I've got is 3.0mb so it looks like that's it. It's a lot better than previous so I'll stick with it. Might do some further tweaking to see if I can match the laptop but overall I'm pretty satisfied. many thanks for all your help.
