Wi Fi and SKY
      #376480 - Wed Dec 19 2007 11:52 AM

I am one of the thousands who has emigrated to SKY from Virgin. I didn't like the idea of web based email, but with such a big saving, I thought it worth making the switch. However, I was pleased to discover once I was connected to find that I could setup a POP3 account with Google to handle Sky's email.

I must also give credit to the way you do not have to be number 145 in the queue to connect to support - they answer pretty quickly (very important with an 0870 number) BUT, it will probably take umpteen times longer than it should, to be able get get an answer to your query. I find that there is a distinct language problem.

Having a problem sending email, I checked the Network Connection box to see the status of my wireless connection and it says I am 'connected with limited access'! WHY! So I spoke to support who didn't seem to understand what I was talking about - I don't think there was too bad a language problem, her English seemed reasonable. I just couldn't take it anymore, so I just hung up.

I shall try again shortly and hope I get a Scottish laddie (to think I use to complain about the Scottish burr - sorry Jock :-) I never will again)

Glad I've got that of my chest!

G'day Nancy.

I read somewhere that a sky enginner sets up the BB connection when it's first installed, if so get a person back from sky to do the job properly.

Your problem could be the gateway address dropping.

I setup everything up myself, didn't need a SKY engineer. My problem is a recent one - I had everything working OK. This blip only reared its head yesterday. Yeah I know that I have to contact SKY this problem - I just have to gird my loins before I do so:-(

G'day Nancy.

Have you checked the gateway and DNS address in the wireless status/properties.

Well, I have found something very interesting if you go to www.chicagotech.net/vista/vistaconnection.htm
you will see that the 'Connected with Limited Access' is a recognised problem with Vista. Something about increasing the NIC?

My problem is SKY - when I had the Belkin (before I switched to SKY) I could make changes myself, load new firmware etc, but everything is built in with the SKY router, everything was automatically setup.

The question is, as my network connection doesn't show 'security-enabled setup' is my system secure?

SKY doesn't have an email address or any sort of contact other than
their dozy support people - who just don't know what I am talking about. What can I do?

No, unless the MAC 00-00-00 etc has been disabled and the allow MAC address enabled. Best to set up the wep/psk security.

Then, if sky automatically setup the router, why have they not got security enabled?.
Access can be got to the router.

Frankly your very much appreciated advice, is rather above my head. I haven't any idea as to how I setup the wep/psk security, as I can't access the SKY setup. I enter various 192.168.2.x into the address without any luck.

At the moment my Net access is limited, sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesn't, as for email - it sits in my outbox for ages - it has taken 16 hours to arrive at it destination.

The website I mentioned above mentions NIC speed adjustment, how do I do that?

A NIC (Network Interface Card) shouldn't need any speed adjustment. It auto connects at whatever speed is set by the network, normally 100mbs but could be 10 or a 1000mbs. If you really want to play with the speed of your NIC (and I strongly recommend that you don't) then press the Windows key and Pause/Break together and choose the Hardware tab. Then click on Device Manager and scroll down the list to Network Adaptors. Press the + button and choose your NIC. Right click and choose Properties then choose the Advanced tab. Click on LinkSpeed/DuplexMode and then you can change the value. Don't be surprised if your network stops working if you change to anything except Auto Negotiation.

Sky used to supply the Netgear router. If they still do, you need to type 192.168.0.1 into a browser window to access the router settings, then use ‘admin’ and ‘sky’ for the default user name and password.

In the left pane click on ’wireless settings’ or similar wording. You will now be able to change your SSID and WEP/WPA key to make it more secure.

To make the wireless connection more reliable, try changing the allocated Channel Number.

Thanks for your very helpful advice. Have logged into the browser, but I do need further guidance from you. What information do I change in SSID and the WEP/WPA key to make it more secure?

Also will this solve my 'Connected with Limited Access' Problem?

1. The SSID can be any name you wish, I don't suggest you use YourName, YourRoad, YourCat, etc. be imaginative.

2. You will probably have to supply a passphrase to create a WPA key.

3. For anyone, including people at your house, to connect wirelessly they will have to type in the SSID and the WPA key that you created.

4. It's always difficult to solve the 'limited' connection problem as a number of things can affect it. In my previous reply, I suggested you go to the router settings and change the channel number to get an improved signal, try going up or down about 6 channels, e.g. if it's currently on 5 set it to 11 or if it's 10 change it to 4.

Also, make sure you don't have metal radiators and thick walls between the router and the PC.

Do you have a third-party firewall?

EDIT. I should have said that when you're changing the security, it's best to do it with the Ethernet cable connected because if you have just one PC connected by wi-fi, you could accidentally lock yourself out. If you do lock yourself out you will have to reset the router (or plug in the Ethernet cable) in order to reconnect.

My apologies for the delay in responding to your post, but I've been away. I shall do as you suggest, but I have no doubt that you will be hearing from me again with regard to this problem.
Incidentally, my second computer on my little network shows that it is 'security enabled', so at least I know my system is secure.

Sky installers dont install your broadband! If you ask them too they just say they cannot! I have had nothing but trouble with mine since it went in. Wireless is a joke as it will not work in the same room let alone anywhere else in the house! I have spent hours on the phone to them about intermittant connection problems but all they are interested in is whether it is working for 1 minute whilst your talking to you, then they put the phone down and tell you to ring back when it goes wrong again. They seem to have no support to send round and help you and you cant even connect an Xbox 360 up to as they dont support them according to Sky. Tell that to the millions out there that have already bought them expecting to use Xbox live which they have paid for!

Well, I've finally found a Hotfix for 'Connected with limited access' from Microsoft. You have to request it from the following website (just in case anyone else gets the same problem')

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930517/

I've forwarded my request and I just hope I won't have any problem installing it!

This problem occurs if a device on the Windows Vista-based computer uses a network bridge to access the network.

Is that what you've got?

I don't have a Network Bridge, as I gather this is where software or hardware connects two or more networks so that they can communicate.

In that case the fix is not for you.
