I have a PC and a laptop both running Windows Vista. There are 3 user accounts on each. Both the computers are connected to the internet through the Netgear router. Using the laptop, I can access my user account files that are on my PC from the laptop but I cannot access files on my laptop from my PC. In the network center I have activated "file sharing" on both of the machines. I have also tried switching off both the firewalls. This hasn't worked. I would like to know how I can access files on my Laptop from my PC?

Do you get an error message or is the request ignored?
How are the computers connected to the router, by wire or wireless?

There is no error message, when I click on laptop pc there is no folder called "users". When I try the other way there is a folder called "users" which I can then click on to access my files. The only folder that comes up is printers.
It is a wireless network.

So, curiously, both computers are wireless!
A few more questions/actions, some of which you may have tried, in no particular order:
1. Are the computers in the same workgroup? 2. Why did you share the Users folder? You should really be sharing at a lower hierarchical level, e.g. a specific user. 3. Do any of the user accounts have a password? 4. Make sure in Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center you have Network Discovery, File Sharing and Public Folder Sharing set to ‘On’ and, if you‘re not using passwords set Password Protected Sharing to ‘Off‘. 5. Are you accessing the shared folders via Windows Orb (Start) > Network?

1. Yes, both are. 2. I didn't share it. It has been like that since the first time I set the network up. As I have said before I can access files on the PC from my laptop. Each user on the laptop can only access their own files on the desktop pc. The problem still is the same. Files on the laptop cannot be accessed from the PC. 3. All the user accounts have passwords. 4. All of them are turned on. 5. Yes I am.

As a test I want you to share a folder as follows:
On the laptop go to Computer > Users, right-click {your user name} then Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add. Now type ‘Everyone’ (not the quotes) and below it select Read. Now Apply, OK, etc. to finish.
Can this folder now be seen on the desktop computer?
I have to go now but will check back later or tomorrow.
