dropped connection
      #376503 - Wed Dec 19 2007 04:44 PM

i have 2 pcs, one running vista ultimate which is the host pc and the other running xp home, i have set up a wireless network and after a lot of tweaking and fiddling have managed to set up filesharing and printer sharing, problem i have is the 2nd pc constantly drops the network connection stopping the pc accessing the network or the internet, i am using a netgear dg834g modem and my isp is aol.
have tried loads of different fixes like making a new connection etc but it does the same no matter what i try, only connects for a few moments then won,t reconnect automatically and drops the connection again if you manage to connect to the network manually. anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

Hi

I don't think i'll be much help but I had similar problems with my netgear a while back and was told to update the router. Something to do with older software on routers and ULL thingy.

I was running XP on all PCs and every so often for no reason i'd lose connection (although nothing changed on screen) I had to resort to turning the router off and on again (technical, i know ;o) ) Then it would be ok for either an hour or a few days.

In the mean time I ended up changing BB suppliers anyway so didnt get round to trying the suggestion. But since i've been using their router I haven't lost connection once. Im thinking it's probably an issue with your router.

its only the second pc in the kids room that drops the connection, the host pc is constantly connected, never have a problem with that, have tried the firmware upgrade as well from netgear for the router as that was recommended before i updated to vista on the host machine. thanks for your suggestions though. i,m sure its probably something really simple that i am not doing right in the set up on the 2nd machine but i can't for the life of me figure out what it is i,m doing wrong

A few things to try :-

1. When you set up the connection, type the WEP/WPA key in hexadecimal rather than as ASCII characters.

2. Changing the channel number in the router settings sometimes helps.

3. As you're using AOL, make sure MTU is set to 1400 in the router settings.
