netgear router goes pearshaped as usual
      #364636 - Sun Sep 09 2007 08:39 PM

So I recently recieved my Netgear WGR614 wireless cable router, and it worked perfectly, for the first few hours. Suddenly my wireless connection just disappeared and won't come back. The wireless light on the front of the router blinks on and off. Internet works fine.

Help plox

Try resetting the router by pressing the reset button on the back with a pin for about 10 seconds.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

There's always the possibility it's faulty. You might need to return it.

Could it be my (brand spanking new) laptop, as even though 60% of the time I can access the internet through wireless, when it inexplicably stops working it goes through periods where my laptop can connect to the network, but not the internet, and sometimes cannot even detect the router. I don't want to send a working piece of kit back only to have the same problem with another one.

When you say the wireless light is flashing, is it a consistant flashing? Some routers do this to show it's working correctly.

To see if it's the laptop losing the connection, try changing the channel broiadcasting in the router settings.

Is it sighted near any cordless phones, microwaves, fishtanks or radioators (yes, really)?

I would suspect that if you can connect to the network but not the internet that it's a router problem but you need to eliminate as many possibilities as you can.

I just changed the channel from 11 to 7, and my laptop disconnected for a few seconds then reconnected. Is this okay?

Usually the connection goes completely dead through the night, I'll wait to see if there's any changes tonight.

I did a bit of research and discovered that the flashing wireless light signifies that everything is cushty on most netgear routers, so I'll put that one on the backburner.

If it's working of course it's OK.

How's it going?
