Firewalls
      #363180 - Tue Aug 28 2007 12:29 AM

I'm using a BT Voyager 2091 ADLS router at home with two PCs plus a couple of laptops. I understand the 2091 has a hardware firewall. Does this mean I don't need firewalls on the individual PCs, or are these still needed for safety? I'd be grateful for advice.

General word is not to just rely on a hardware firewall. A hardware/software firewall combination would be recommended. Check the security section of the forum for a sticky with a list of free firewalls

I know the general advice is to use a software firewall along with the hardware one in the router but I don't necessarily agree with that. A hardware firewall is by far the most effective type you can get. The ones found in modern routers will do all (and more) that even the best software ones can achieve. I rely solely on the one in my router.

Now comes the big BUT.... I also don't go round inviting hackers on board by opening emails from people I've never heard of, opening attachments from those same people, surfing dodgy websites or indulging in illegal downloads.

If you don't do any of those things either AND you haven't got any nosy kids who might do them then I would say a hardware firewall is enough. If you want the comfort of a software firewall as well the word on the streets is that Comodo free is one of the better ones.

I'm a Comodo user myself. There's been a few times where I've stupidly let my guard down but Comodo's saved the day by stopping whatever nasty it was from getting access to the 'net.

Another plus is that if the computer is moved to a different place or Internet connection, you still have some form of security installed on it.
