I thought my network was secure
      #355522 - Sun Jul 01 2007 08:48 PM

I have a Belkin wireless network and have used the 128 WEP security to 'lock' the network. When I try to attach a new laptop to the network for the first time I have to enter the key. Imagine my surprise therefore when I look at my router and see under something called DHCP Client list not only the computer names I recognise but a load that I don't - even after hitting the refresh button.

So I have entered the MAC address of ones I only want on my network but the others still remain in the DHCP client list and they are still 'available' to allocate to my MAC filtering options.

Can any one help?

thanks in advance

They sometimes show devices that have connected at some time, rather than now. Is using WPA security not an option?

I wondered that. I am going to reboot the modem/ router and see if that clears the list.

Which WPA should I chose? I am offered the choice of WPA PSK (No Server) or WPA (with radius server)

thanks

Use WPA-PSK with no server.

Use TKIP and enter a random string of letters, numbers and characters, at least 10 characters.

Richie

sorted mate. Couldn't get rid of the 'memorised' DHCP client list but can confirm that the MAC filtering really works a treat. Brought home a wireless laptop from work and there was no way it could near the network until I disabled MAC filtering, allowed it in, and then re-enabled MAC filtering again.

Confident now that no-one is accessing my network

thanks for your help
