slave ?
      #229767 - Thu Oct 13 2005 08:57 AM

hi all,

Ive just got hold of an old hard drive with windows 98 and a friend suggested i use it as a slave to store my music and stuff. is this possible and is it easy.

My main pc runs windows xp with a 2mb connection. I dont need the other hard drive to have access to the net.

Im looking ata cable in the argos book, a crossover cable. is it really as easy as plugging them togther? will it act like my mp3 player eg a portable storage device? i somehow dout it.

any advice would be great

thanks

Yes it's possible and yes, it's easy.

The first question must be do you want to use it as an external hard drive or are you prepared to open up your PC and put it in there? If you choose the second option it will cost you nothing as you won't need any extra cables or power supplies.

If you want it to be external you will need a 'caddy' to hold it and they normally come with an external power supply. You will also need to plug it into a port on your PC. The fastest ports are Firewire, followed by USB2.0. A USB1.0 port really isn't fast enough for high speed data transfer between hard disk and PC.

Thanks for that.

It s going to be external , its just another tower really and really old.It runs ok on its own.
Is there a way of finding out witch ports i have, Im a real novice at this sort of thing.

If it's still in it's original tower that's a whole new ball game. You seem to be suggesting that you will simply leave everything as is, switch it on and let it boot up in Windows 98 and then connect your existing PC to it. Is that right?

Yes you can do that and you would need a Network Interface Card (NIC) in each PC and an ethernet crossover cable. You would then need to put both PCs in the same Workgroup and setup file sharing on the Win98 PC. You would also need to allow access to your PC through your firewall.

I have to say it would be 10 times more efficient to remove the hard disk from the Win98 PC, install it yours and the use it as a slave hard drive.

Sorry if I made it sound like hard work, it isn't really that difficult. As for Web sites, sorry I can't be of much help there. I just picked it up as I went along with a bit of trial and error. Why don't you do what you wanted in the first place; get yourself a crossover cable and plug it in. Then we'll get to the next stage.
