Opening new tabs problem

Wonder if anyone can help. I am having trouble opening new tabs in IE7. This has only started in the last couple of days. What happens is when I click for a new tab the word "connecting" comes up but then it seems to freeze and the tab does not open and I do not get the splash page confirming I have opened a new tab. IE7 then freezes altogether and I cannot close it by clicking the x top right. I have to use task manager and sometimes terminate iexplore.exe from the processes tab as well. As long as I do not try to open a new tab IE7 seems to work ok. I have tried disabling add ons and i thought I had solved it as I appeared to be able to open and close tabs with various add ons disabled, but when I then closed and re opened IE7 the same problem occured although I had not re enabled the add ons. I have not done a virus scan but I am running Norton 360 so I think it is unlikely I would have picked up a virus or spyware that could cause this problem. If any one has any ideas (other than use Firefox!) I would be very grateful.

First port of call is to rule infection out. There's no security program perfect and things can slip through. Try running a full , free , online scan... here. It will take some time but could be worthwhile.

Have you tried running with no add ons. If you click on start > all programs > accessories > system tools , you'll see an option to run Internet Explorer with no add ons. Try running in this mode for a while to see how it goes.
