Internet running slow / weird sites in DNS cache
      #392440 - Wed Apr 23 2008 12:36 AM

Hi, I've been having serious problems with my connection speed. I have a multiboot machine (two installs of XP) and the one I use mainly for surfing has slowed down considerably (the other boot's connection speed is fine). Nothing's showing up in any spyware scans although I notice today that when I tried to flush my DNS cache it didn't work and there's a load of weird sites in there.

If somebody could check this I'd greatly appreciate it!

Welcome to the Webuser forum.

I don't see anything untoward in your log, however, i do notice that you don't have any anti virus installed.

please go to THIS page and install 1 of the free anti virus programs, run a full scan with it and then post a fresh HJT log.

Thanks very much!

I've installed Avast and I'm running it and I'll post a HJT log once I'm done but I think I've actually solved the problem. Spybot S&D seems to write all these spyware sites into the "hosts" file in C:/Windows/system32/drivers/etc folder so that if your computer tries to connect to them it goes to 127.0.0.1 instead. I edited the file and my DNS cache is normal and my connection speed is back to normal as well. Now I'm wondering if that means that my computer was constantly trying to connect to these all the time?

In any case, I'll post the HJT log again soon, thanks very much for your time!

I have over 4000 sites in my host file, i can't see that making a lot of difference to your performance.
we'll see what the anti virus says.

can you please click on REPLY in MY post when you are responding.
it means i get a notification that you have responded..

Re: Internet running slow / weird sites in DNS cache [Re: shroomfox]

Did you run a scan with the anti virus, did it find anything ?

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

AVG kept on crashing when I tried to run a scan with it. I uninstalled it and installed Avast instead - it did a scan on startup and found a few files but didn't identify them. I ran another scan with it when Windows started up and it didn't find anything.

I'll install combofix when I get home this evening.

Re: Internet running slow / weird sites in DNS cache [Re: shroomfox]
      #392709 - Fri Apr 25 2008 08:36 PM

Rerun HJT,and put a checkmark beside these :-

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)

now close all windows and browsers and click FIX CHECKED

That's all i can see in those logs.

try this :-

Download and scan with CCleaner
  1. CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
  2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
    Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.

  3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

  4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
  7. Click "exit" when done.

then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

also update to IE 7 at the microsoft update site.

Re: Internet running slow / weird sites in DNS cache [Re: bricat]
      #392991 - Tue Apr 29 2008 12:18 AM

Well, I don't believe this but even though I didn't have any in the first place I seem to have gotten some spyware since I did all this. A dialog box keeps on popping up saying ""Your computer is infected with dangerous virus!" Note : Strongly recommend to install antispyware programme to clean your system and avoid total crash of your computer.
Clock OK to download the antispyware (recommended)" meaning I have to click cancel every time it pops up! Here's my HJT log:

you can be 100% assured you didn't get it from anything i told you to do.

you use utorrent.exe, what have you d/loaded in the last 4 days since you last posted a HJT log.

since you last posted a HJT log you have also acquired C:\Program Files\Dudez\ProtoWall\ProtoWall.exe

which is used to hide your IP address

when did you install that program, where did you get it from ?

Sorry, I never meant to imply it was anything you asked me to do! I know that's not the case. A weird dialogue box popped up the other day and I clicked it by accident so I think that's where this came from but sadly I don't know what I was looking at the time - I was a bit drunk to be completely honest.

I haven't downloaded anything with utorrent since. I downloaded protowall from here: http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php - it's an alternative to PeerGuardian, it was recommended by a friend to me.

Straight after combofix ran there I started Avast again and it found a file called konsal.dll, Avast says it's a Win32:Rootkit-gen[Rtk]. I took the recommended action and moved it to the chest.

Here's my combofix log:

ComboFix 08-04-28.2 - Conan 2008-04-29 17:51:01.6 - NTFSx86
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.1397 [GMT 1:00]
Running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Conan\Desktop\ComboFix.exe
* Created a new restore point

WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
