talk about being ad bludgeoned
      #391559 - Tue Apr 15 2008 02:38 PM

WebUser people; Don't you think you're over doing the 'Subscribe to WebUser' adverts, pop-ups, marquees, flash ads, static ads, banner ads... need I go on?

The front page is an obstacle course of [****] WebUser ads. Get rid of some please!

Oh and feel free to delete this post and ban me for a week for speaking my mind - it's something else you tend to be good at.

Great Mag - poor website.

Hi DJ2,

Sorry you're upset and don't like the forum, Nothing wrong with constructive criticism and to my knowledge people are never banned for speaking their mind as long as they aren't offencive.

Joe.

You only run the risk of being banned for your poor choice of language on a family forum...

Okay!

instead of avoiding the issue (as you both have), can you actually answer me this question:
Don't you (honestly) think that there is an overuse of WebUser adverts on the FrontPage - an average of FIVE in-you-face webuser ads per page?

I mean WebUser mag is forever talking about how to block pop-ups etc. Yet the WebUser website actually has them! That Yellow 'pop-up' is a vile intrusion and I would think that a magazine that provides advice on how to combat such atrocities would have more sense than to use them on the site.
(by the way that horrible yellow thing (the pop-up) can't be closed on Mozilla (at lest on my brower).

I promise you that the more 'buy me! buy me!' ads you shove on site the less people will be inclined to actually subscribe. It's certainly put me off and I'd like to hear what other forum users (not the fawners) think.

It's not a matter of either of us 'avoiding the issue' but a matter of having no say or sway over the matter, and therefore not in a position to comment, positively or negatively.

I suspect this is something the publisher has control over (or even a higher office within IPC Media), not the moderators or admin of this forum (we have no jurisdiction on the remainder of the site even), and I dare say not even the editorial office.

However, with regard to pop-ups; on this site they are generally set to appear once-per-session, providing you have cookies enabled.

>and therefore not in a position to comment, positively or negatively<

Why, Have "they" hijacked your ability to offer a a free & personal opinion?

You may have 'no say' but you could at least answer the question could you not?

Or will your powers to moderate be revoked if you say something that might hurt "their" delicate feelings?

Freedom of speech is alive and well (although not here it would seem!)

Seems to me you have a bee in your bonnet over something and no matter how I respond it will not satisfy you.

You asked a question I can't answer specifically, however I did give you a response, and suggested to whom you could be directing your comments to.

Any question concerning IPC Media's policy RE advertising on the site is outside my remit and not an area I could, as an administrator of the forum, respond to on any official level.

In addition, as it's an official response you're after my personal opinion is neither here nor there, besides I like to think I still have a choice about who I converse with on a personal level.

As for your other, rather juvenile, quips about 'delicate feelings' and 'freedom of speech', we'll leave it there, shall we.

Well, I've a bee in my bonnet because I resent having adverts chucked at me from every corner of this website (look to the right - look to the header - look to the footer) and I'd simply like confirmation that WebUser is slightly over egging the pudding that's all.

>I still have a choice about who I converse with on a personal level.<

yep, we'll leave it at that as your reply speaks volumes and ironically answers my question.

There is an easy way to remove any advert from any page. Use the Firefox Addon, Adblock Plus. Then right click the offending ad and click Adblock Image from the menu.

Having said this, Webuser Magazine, in my opinion, is superb. I've been a subscriber for 2-3 years now and I have learned many useful tips, free services and sites in that time and would advise any new people stumbling across the website to try out the magazine.

The website and forum is also class - my favourite parts being the News page and the all of the people on this forum all too willing to help you out and contributing fun stuff and techie stories etc.

I certainly don't resent Webuser advertising the magazine on the website, as without a successful magazine, there would be no website/forum.

Sorry to butt in but....

Mate, Webuser is a business. As much as they're here to provide information and help us (certainly me), they've got a business to run. If the popups and banners are that much of a problem for you, don't use the site! very simple. I'm sick and tired of selfish people wanting wanting wanting....how about thanking for a change.

Your positive criticsm turned into winging after you received the others responses. Get a life man (or woman)!

And as you voiced your opinion, this is mine!

Thank you Webuser and keep up the good work.
