Free Online Greek Course
      #389957 - Mon Mar 31 2008 10:31 AM

I am enquiring about an article I saw in Webuser, I cannot recall exactly which issue but it was approximately two months ago. It was an article regarding free on-line courses. I am interested in the Greek course and wonder if anyone has details of this article for me.

Hi Goodgy,

Welcome to the forums. You can find our reviews of free language course websites here.

Hope this helps.

In Issue 177, we mentioned a site called Mango Languages, which is free and offers 1,100 lessons across 12 different courses, including Greek.

Speaking as someone who has toiled on-and-off for several years Greek is a difficult language to master and courses with audio are essential.
The best I found was a comprehensive free online Greek course offered at:
http://kypros.org/LearnGreek/
It is Cypriot Greek so a tiny number words used may not be common in other parts of Greece (a bit like UK really ) but it is fine otherwise.

It consists of 105 lessons of 15 minutes duration. There are a
accompanying lengthy docs with transcripts and vocab notes for each lesson which are actually prepared by experienced students of the courses. I used it some years ago in my days of "dial-up" and managed to record many lessons onto my computer for easier study. The course moves slowly but thoroughly.

Another site which I have played with is Filoglossia:
http://www.xanthi.ilsp.gr/filog/ which is briefer but prettier with pictures and captions.

You may have already tried the tourist phrase-books with tapes etc. I found these very useful for repeat playing in the car, (I mean REPEAT !!) in the background and possibly gave me the best way for "instant recall" of common Greek words.

I found that I had to combine several methods, i.e. audio (a lot), books and if possible an evening course (so you can ask questions).

Good luck and make sure you USE it even if only a few words.
