I opened up my OE today only to dicover that save for my Sent Items folder, all the messages in my other folders such as Inbox and others created by me have now disappeared. Prior to today I have recently had a popup every time I've closed OE asking me to compact my messages which I have ignored. Has my pc now gone into a huff and zapped everything or can I retrieve them?
Thanks!

No guarantee but this may work: Click Start > Search and type FOLDERS.DBX (for clarity only), Right click on the file > Rename and type FOLDERS.OLD, click OK.
If you cannot access it because it’s ‘read only’, right-click it > Properties and uncheck the Read attribute. Now restart Outlook Express and a new folders.dbx file will be recreated automatically.

Thanks for the reply, BurrWalnut. Unfortunately the search didn't turn up any results in that name. Cheers anyway

It will find the folder if you include 'Hidden' files in your search.

Just to add, you could try this method to locate the files:
Open Outlook Express > Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder
Use your mouse to highlight the full path showing (hold your left click down, then run it across everything showing till you get to the end) and while still highlighted, Right click > Copy.
Now open an Explorer Window, ie My Computer, paste your 'Store folder path' in the address bar > Go/Enter, and you now should have all your folders on view. Double click them one at a time to see if it reveals the missing files.
Good luck.

I found the files after checking the 'hidden' option (thanks, BurrWalnut & Fusion) but to view them I had to 'Open With..' a program so I chose OE. All this results in is my OE opening but still not showing the contents of my 'Local Folders'. Incidentally out of the 10 folders I'd created, 8 have no longer any previous emails yet 2 still remain untouched with contents still there. The old emails must still be there somewhere as the file sizes of the supposedly 'empty' files are quite hefty (6000kb+). What would you suggest I change the program to that will open the .DBX files?

Sometimes I wonder why I bother to reply. You don’t need to open any files, simply right-click and rename the folder as I said above. Hopefully you haven't made the corruption any worse.
To make it even simpler for you, I’ll list every action you have to take:
1. First of all we (you) are going to move the OE store location to an easier to-get-at location and remove the hidden attribute by: - Open My Documents, File > New > Folder and name it Mail Folder. Go to Outlook Express > Tools > Options > Maintenance Tab and click on Store Folder and browse/change it to point to the new folder (Mail Folder). - Close Outlook Express and the mail boxes will be in the new location. You may have to open/close OE twice.
2. Open My Documents, double-click Mail Folder, right-click FOLDERS.DBX (capitals for clarity only) > Rename and type FOLDERS.OLD, click OK. If the folder is ‘Read only’ right-click it > Properties and remove the attribute, then rename it.
3. Now restart Outlook Express and check if (some of) your emails have appeared.
