google mail

I have set up a new google email account and have a google toolbar on IE7 which has the google mail icon on it. However, it does not notify me when I have new mail.

Can anyone tell me how to do this ?

Any idea how I can import my AOL address book into google mail, or is that an no go and I have to do each one individually ?
