Outlook Rules for emails with no sender/subject
      #205099 - Tue Jul 05 2005 12:41 AM

I'm receiving an awful lot of emails that have no sender and no subject, and when I open them, have no body either. They're just completely blank!!!

...except when I look at the message header.

It appears that these emails are being sent from <anything>@hanmail.net. <anything> could literally be anything - for example, the last two I received were from junghi81@hanmail.net and junghi80@hanmail.net.

I wanted to see what I was dealing with so I went to hanmail.net myself and it just redirects me to some japanese website (daum.net).

But the real problem I'm having is that, since these emails don't have "From" or "Subject" filled in, I can't create a rule in Outlook 2003. I keep getting this message whenever I try:

"The message must have a subject or a sender before it can be used to create a rule."

My question is: Can I create a rule that looks in the email header directly to identify the offending emails and delete them?

Start with a new blank rule but don't select a condition. You'll then see an alert that reminds you that your rule will apply to all messages. Select an action and then add the exceptions. Type a, click Add, type e, click Add... until all of the vowels are entered.

So you should now have a rule like this

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Mark it as low importance
except if the subject contains 'a' or 'e' or 'i' or 'o' or 'u'

Note: if you receive messages forwarded to you that contain only FW:, you'll need to include either f or w in the exception list.

I was just about to try what you suggested (it does seem like it would work) but now my rule wizard is showing an option to look for specific words in the message header (which I'm *SURE* was not there before).

So what I've done is set a rule that moves all emails to the Junk Mail Folder that contains "hanmail" anywhere in the message header, and it works great.

This is what my rule reads now:

Apply this rule after message arrives
with hanmail in the message header
and on this machine only
move it to the Junk E-mail folder

I'll keep you guys posted whether this rule continues to work or not, in case others encounter this problem.

Would it not be better and easier to create a rule to block part of the senders email address not the whole of the " from line" or "subject"? If a block is applied for the "hanmail" part of the address then any emails from this domain name will be discarded to which ever folder or deleted, depending on how you set the rule, setting the rules differ slightly in outlook express to microsoft outlook but it will run just as effective in both. I have 2 blocks in my email account one for subject the other for part email addresses and it works pretty well at preventing unwanted spam
