Well, how hacked off am I this morning... bid on four CD's before I went to bed last night for auctions finishing in the early hours - all bids were over and above the minimum bid.
Checked up this morning to find my bids were cancelled - the message from eBay says check the listings for explanation, but the listings show the items sold to other bidders - for the minimum bid! Oh and one not sold at all
I have contacted the seller for an explanation and I hope there is a sensible one - otherwise a complaint to eBay might be in the offing.

Unfortunately, no matter how frustrating, the fact is making a bid gives you no right to an item until the auction closes. It may be that the seller was approached by someone who offered him a deal to take the lot off his hands, but items get pulled all the time on eBay, and you just have to move on.
Just recently we had to pull a lot off from sale with a day to go (and with bids on), as we had sold the item via our website. We incurred the fees for that, but it had to be done. On the opposite side of the coin we had a buyer recently contact us to pull their bid and then contact us just after to rebid as they now knew what the other buyer's highest bid was, so only wanted to go above that! We blocked them from the auction altogether.
No different from seeing something in the paper, phoning up and then being told when you get there that it is no longer for sale. EBay, to be honest, would do very little in these situations.

I thought that this sort of thing was frowned upon by eBay - unless a disclaimer that the item was advertised elsewhere was specified. If you say that it happens all the time then perhaps I have just been lucky in the five years I have been a member.
Still there is no shortage of CD sellers is there - and it's his loss really as I was watching another two so that would have been a substantial sale had I won all six.
Thanks for your response anyway FR.

I don't think we've pulled more than 5 items in the last three years, but the reasons varied from, as mentioned, sold through another route (that's actually unusual as we don't like to mess people about but we had JUST set up Google Checkout on the website and used the item as an example and wham! sold!), hadn't actually got the item (Yes, we have accidentally relisted items we have sold out of!) and once we pulled something as the sheer amount of stupid questions drove us mad. Only twice as I recall were there actually bidders.
I'd still like to hear what the seller says to you, but as you say, if this is the first time it has happened to you in five years, that is pretty good going. My current fave is on Amazon where I have raving loon sending me nasty emails as they claim they have never agreed to buy an item that I sold on Amazon Marketplace. Yet I have the email from Amazon confirming sale, the funds were in my account until I transferred them to the bank, and Amazon have reconfirmed the sale in an email.
Oh, the cost of the item? 50p...............

Under English law a seller in an auction is allowed to withdraw his/her item from sale at any time up until the hammer comes down, i.e. the auction ends. Whether a seller displays a disclaimer or not, he/she is entitled to pull an item. Have you ever tried buying a car on ebay? There's no such thing as a bargain, because the seller more often than not, in my experience, pulls out if a satisfactory bid is not reached. No doubt that's why ebay introduced a flat fee for selling vehicles.
