Hey,
So here is my question which I hope someone can help/comment on as it would save me a lot of headache later. I'm searching for a server and have come to the conclusion that you get more for your money when getting one from the US.They offer more b/w and better lines (10mbit upwards dedicated for good price) as well as betteer specs, offers etc. Anyway back to the point in question, I'm wondering how can I get listed in google and other UK search engines as I hear if you host on a US server it's almost impossible to get listed in the UK search engines unless done correctly. Seing as though 100% of my users will be directed at UK how would I achieve this?
Hope to hear a reply as soon as possible with regards to this, as I don't want to fork out money and find that it will cost me in the long run.
Kind Regards, Darthvader

Firstly I'm curious how you came to the conclusion that US servers are better, could you show some of your research? Secondly there are no problems being hosted in the US and being listed in UK search engines. As an example a site I used to help run which had over 2000 visitors a day comes second in a google uk search for its primary keywords and it is on a US server. In all my experience I have never encountered this problem, and I'm curious how you heard this to?

There are known issues with US hosting:
You will NOT be listed by Google if you are hosted in the US UNLESS you have a .co.uk (or other .uk) domain.
Due to the distance, the ping times are greater and therefore the performance of your site is reduced (slightly). Also, there will be a greater number of hops (see your tracert) and therefore outages will occur more often even when your server is up, due to issues with networks between the UK and your US server.
Unless your US host is very good at replying in a timely manner to email support, the obvious costs for telephone support can be an issue.

Oh, and although it does not relate to dedicated servers as much as shared hosting, US hosting companies oversell hugely, that is one reason why they are so cheap. You may find they have oversold your bandwidth, even on a dedicated server!

Thanks for you replies Zippy Brown, the host I'm thinking of going with is Hivelocity! Any comments on them as they seem pretty good.
And my reply to nanook is it's obvious you get more for your money due to b/w being cheaper over there. Although zippy did point out some very good points about tracerts and network problems.
PS-Although I must add that I've still not decided whether to do with a US host or UK and even if it was UK i would run a mile from 1and1. Me wonders how they get listed as number 1 when clearly the ammount of bad reviews about there uptime and downtime as well as next to none support
Thanks for your input

This is a question to zippy, if I got a 10mbit unmetred line would it be enough to give a fast enough speed or would I need more. I'm hoping to increase as my need grows. Although I don't want to go in or discuss what I'm doing (no offense) although it's not anything special at all but will be to me.

I am with 1&1 and have been for about three months.
This is my package- AMD Athlon 64 3,000+ 1,024 MB DDR RAM 2x80 GB hard drive (RAID1)
100 MBit data transfer speed as standard. For 100 simultaneous full website views of a typical 100 kByte website it will take 1 second, on a normal 10mbit connection it will take 10 seconds.
Cost £80 per month.
Before this I was on shared hosting, I almost ran out of space and the forum used to crash every now and again, occassionally the site would crash. I would contact the hosting company and often they would sort it out in a few minutes, apart from when I was on holiday and the forum was offline for 4 days!
When on shared hosting I was in contact with their support almost every day because something always went wrong or did not work. I do not have this problem with 1&1 and so far the server is very fast and reliable
