My FTP has caused four websites to be linked. What happens is irrespective of whether I display site A, B, C,or D, in the left hand pane, it is always site A that is shown in the right hand pane. The four sites display presently correctly online, but of course I am not able to access B, C, or D to add or remove content. I have not had any problems for the past eighteen months and I am unaware how this has occured.
How can I unlink them? I am using XP and WS_FTP Ipswitch free version.
I have tried going back in turn to the previous four or five restore points, but each time receive the message "unable to restore" which seems rather odd.

See how you get on with a different FTP client (e.g. SmartFTP, or Windows' My Network Places). If the problem persists then it would appear to be a server issue, assuming all sites are on the same server...

I've tried a few, but find Filezilla (free) to be the best for me.
The remote pane should give a full tree view of your site folders if you are looking at the root directory. I'm a bit confused as to what you mean by restore. Restoring your PC won't have any effect on the remote server where the site is stored.

Am in process of trying to download an alternative FTP prog (when Pipex will let me! it is is just awfull lately. it keeps going off line sometimes for minutes, and on Saturday for hours). The reference to system restore was just an aside, I mentioned it just in case it had any bearing on the problem. will keep you informed. (Pipex has failed again in between typing this and posting it)

Have now downloaded and used smartftp. I can now view and access all four sites, that part of the problem is now solved, thank you all. The part of the problem still remaining is that the sites are still linked in some way, in as much as, if I delete a file on one site if it exists in the others it is deleted in them all. I am thinking now of backing everything up, and deleting contents of the four sites (all on the same server)and re-uploading them one site at at a time.(fortunately only one site of any great importance to me) I will hold fire for a little while in case anyone can suggest another or better solution.

I don't have the answer, but out of curiosity; do all four sites have totally independent domain names, logins, etc?

Ah, so in effect they are all subdomains of homecall.co.uk, which may or may not have some bearing on it. IMO, and I'm no expert, it seems that the issue is with Pipex and nothing at your end.

Thank you for your advice. I am now going to go ahead with deletion and re-uploading (had to wait over two hours for my internet connection before I could send this reply, it seems to be ok up to about 2-30pm each day!) thanks once more. (Just gone again before I could send.)

Have now deleted almost all content on all sites on my homecall server. and have proved by uploading a test file to site'A' that it then appears in sites 'B' 'C' 'D' also. Reckon I will have to take it up with homecall. Still open to any suggestions, Will keep you informed

Regret the Tech guy at homecall was unable to help, had not come across this problem before, said that server problems were outside their remit, and consulted a colleage who suggested a possible virus. Have now uploaded my sites again (with the original problem unresolved). Homecall did say they could delete my webspace at their end (which I think would allow me to start again with a fresh allocation of webspace) As it was only a hobby site for the benifit of my cycling club, and I am getting a bit old to handle all the hassle I may now give up on the whole idea of maintaining a website. Still open to suggestions though.

Web hosting is very cheap now, have you thought about buying a hosting package, at least this way you will get the support you need if things go a bit wrong providing you go with a recommended company
Cheers

Sounds a good suggestion, I need a minimum of 50MB space at the present time and could easily use about another 50MB by end of 2008. It is purely to keep club members up to date, and there would not be much traffic generated. Suggestions from forum members welcomed.

Have been browsing through hosting sites featured in the webuser forums, two or three look promising, I want to retain my present site layout (hand coded html). One site is ruled out as it uses templates to construct, and the others do not offer any construction details untill you have signed up. I am going to try Hartinternet as they are free and if I find I cannot design it as I wish I have nothing to loose. Still open to suggestions, will let you know how I get on.
