Hi,
I have always used 800 X 600 resolution in the past, but have recently upgraded to a new TFT monior which works best with a screen resolution of 1024 X 768. When i set my monitor settings to this resolution i have problems with some of the websites which i visit including this one. The problem is that some of my web pages I view will only take up about 3/4 of the screen. How do I get the pages to utilize all of the monitor screen?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Have you reverted to 800 x 600 to see what that looks like. I have a TFT with the same recommended resolution as yours but mine is set at 800 x 600 with no problems viewing any web pages.

Short answer is.... you don't. A lot of sites still hard code the width of their pages to a fixed size, so no matter what resolution you use, if they set it to be 800 wide that's what you will get. This is a fault of the webmaster, not a problem with your monitor.

Many thanks for your replys. I think the problem is that of the webmaster only setting 800 wide on their websites as some websites work fine whilst others only use 3/4 of the browsers window.

The trouble is is that if you go to any forum and ask what resolution you should design websites in and virtually everyone will jump up and shout 800 x 600. I have a serious problem with this, because as you so rightly point out more and more people have TFT screens and 17" monitors.
IMHO, those who advocate 800 x 600 are living in the dark ages

I find it best to have the Favourites open in the left hand side, then if a page is too wide just close the favourites for a while.

Well TFC, if you visit my site, you will find it self-adjusts to your monitor. I place all content within a single embracing table of 100% width so it is dynamic, accommodating larger screens and the prehistoric relics still using tidgy little 640*480.

I agree that websites should adjust to the user's screen setup.
There are many reasons for people running as lower resolutions - some have a small screen and others do it because they have eyesight problems meaning that they cannot read the text if the resolution is too high.
While we're on the subject, it would be really good if web sites could adjust to the user's selected text size as well - I use Accessibility options to override the standard text size as have difficulty reading small text and it is very irritating when this makes a website unuseable. The most common problems I have with this are that the navigation menu down the left hand side of some pages will not scroll, even though the rest of the page will, and graphics that overwrite the screen text because they do not adjust to the fact that the text is taking up more room.

LOL I agree, and am partially at fault there myself. You cannot adjust the text size in your browser for my site, as it is set by a CSS file, not HTML tags. However I will provide a Site Map (to be released in the next update) which will be adjustable by zooming the image.
