IE6 - Error Message
      #4807 - Mon Aug 04 2003 09:45 PM

For the past couple of weeks, on closing down IE6, I've been getting what looks like an official Microsoft IE message by way of a small window or panel which informs me "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience" The window/panel carries the blue Explorer logo. It then tells me "if you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on maybe lost" .

It then says "Please tell Microsoft about this problem" and explains it will automatically create an error report to send to Microsoft and finally provides 2 buttons, one sends the error report and one doesn't.

Is this a genuine Microsoft error message?

I'm getting it at every session, Paul Lomax on the YBW forum advised me to use the repair option on my control panel but this hasn't effected a repair so I've just downloaded a complete new IE6 installation and I'm STILL getting the message. He also advised me if I couldn't resolve the thing to talk to you guys on here.

I can't close a session of Internet Explorer without this window flashing up. So my question is - have I genuinely got an IE problem or is this a virus (though I don't think it can be as I do have Norton Antivirus and ZoneAlarm installed).

Your advice would be welcomed and please feel free to call me a prat if the solution is obvious.

Cheers, Brian.

What Operating system are you using?
What does the message say if you click on the 'details' button?
I had IE crashing, with a similar message, caused by using IE6 with ME, I went back to win98 (and IE6) -problem solved.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I am not the original poster but I have the same problem. I am running XP with IE 6. Not sure what the "details" box says.

because your running norton av and zonealarm is no guarantee that you don't have a virus, a lot of users have reported viruses today and all are using anti virus software, i suggest you run an update and scan your system.
if i had known i would live this long, i would have taken better care of myself.

Definitely!

No idea what's causing the problem, but the "Send report to Micro$oft" message is probably genuine, error reporting being a feature of IE. I usually click on "Don't send", but that's up to you.

You need to scan for as many little nasties as possible though. I'm feeling lazy right now or I'd suggest a few links, but you'll find them elsewhere on this site.

As well as up to date virus protection, you could do with Ad Aware to check for spyware, and it's probably worth downloading Hijack This! in case Putasolutions gets involved and asks for a log file.

Hope that helps. If not, you know where to find us.
