Hiya... This is my first post and this goes to probably the professionals out there... I have an AOL dialup connection but I never use AOL browser or Email. In fact I dont like such a heavy programme running in the background. I always use Internet explorer. So I was wondering if anyone knows or is it possible to connect to Internet with the Windows dial up networking programme...?? Apparently AOL doesnt allow people to connect without installing their software. Is there any way to get around it??? Anyone??? please answer.. Cheers haris

You can uninstall AOL and use the Internet Connection Wizard to connect to some ISP's, including Freeserve (Wanadoo).

Not sure if you can but you could try taking a note of the number aol connects with then do as richie says and in the wizard enter the aol connection number, your aol username and password and then try connecting without using the aol browser, hopefully that will work.

Hi Guys.. Thanks for the reply.. But I had already tried what zoolander suggested and Richie, I said I want to use my AOL as my ISP but I dont want to use their software coz as u rightly said most other ISPs allow us to connect to Internet with the Windows dial up networking software. Why AOL is forcing us to install their 10MB software!! It doesnt look fair in my opinion. So I wanted to know is there any way to get connected with AOL internet without installing their software.

Looking at the problem I see your Dilemma I'm on AOL (5 years) I have email accounts with several providers other than AOL ,Try Lycos,Yahoo, Msn or try and get an Invite for Gmail(1000MB mailbox) I barely use AOLs facilities bar the email though It can be shut down In Parental controls to recieve selected messages ONLY Can shut down IMs and Chat as well I click on 1 of my saved Favourites to start surfing I do not return to AOL pages unless needed Today I have been on AOL for 10 minutes checking email, rest of the time being in places like this. Many Moons ago I thought places Like AOL were a "Walled Garden site" where you were restricted to viewing the contents on that page only but as soon as I found the way out onto the WWW I only returned to Log on and Off TIP Change your Home page to http://www.Google.com and start finding whats out there and if you do see something useful click on the red heart at the top of the window to save it to the AOL Favourites PS Am now Resident on sites like this Finding Links for people
In case you are wondering? The AP in my name is Answerpool.com (see my profile)

There's probably not a way then. Just use it to connect, minimize it and use Internet Explorer instead (or Firefox eh Zoolander?)

drharis it looks like this is the price you pay for using AOL as your isp because they want to force the software on you for various reasons, like advertising and to encourage you to use their online services and this is why most of the time when someone has been with AOL they never go back.
BUT no doubt someone will know a way around this so dont't give up yet, try asking on a few forums and you might get lucky.

Well Yes you can.... I'm on AOL 9.0 Broadband 1MB and have no problem and not using any of the software. After i signed up i deleted the software and connected through the BT ADSL connect the modem driver CD added to the Connections area.
Just double click it and ener this Username : <AOLscreenname>@aol.com Password : your password for that account
O yeah like the banner in thingys sig USE Firefox 20x's better than IE with added extras i love Firefox!!
And it'll connect to AOL as long as your on BB as it auto connect to the AOL Network. Any way if it dosen't work first time around just hit re-dial and it'll run fine and your PC and your Connection will be 10x better without AOL being on your system.
Hope this helps all those with this problem ;)

Hi Winters, Thanks for ur reply. But I have few doubts. First of all I had tried entering my username and password in the Windows dialup networking and it dint work. should we need to have a Broadbadn for this to work..? And also u dint seem to enter the dial up number. In a dial up u have to enter the dialup number right?? And do i have to install the BT dialup thingy u were mentioning in your post???

This is over AOL Broadband this cannot be done with a 56kb dialup connection as it requires the number which you can get through the AOL software just the same wway it asked you to chose a number write a few down and add those in the propities of the connection.
As for Broadband this is not needed as BB (BroadBand) links directly to the WAN aka internet on the number the drivers are programmed with so all you have to do is use your username and password but only that not a number as this will disrupt the connection.
But remember Dialup REQUIRES a number to phone for its connection as for BB it doesn't as DSL means Direct Secure Line which means you only use it no-one else can so it doesn't require a number hence 24/7 connected to the net.
I hope this sorts any more problems if not contact me on MSN at apjcookie1 at hotmail.com

As I told u I had tried entering username and password with the AOL access number many times but I was never able to connect. That was why I started this thread in the first place. Now u seem to tell me to do the same thing. I am sure it will not work., at least with a dialup. I dont know about broadband. So is there any other settings I have to change to make this possible..? That was my question.

I don't know if it is possible with a DialUp connection unless your using AOL 9.0 which comes with software to connect without the browser called AOLDial.exe or that which connects the same way as AOL but without the browser of AOL.
But then again AOL BB costs nothing now days depending apon where you live like country wise i mean as i'm in the UK and i pay £29.99 for a 1MB unlimited connection and it is worth it.

Hi,
Complete novice here, I have read this thread and am none the wiser as to how to connect to the internet just through clicking on firefox without going through the whole aol launch, I too am on aol dial up connection. I am on aol 6, are you suggesting that it is only with aol 9 that you can access aoldial.exe which would enable me to establish an internet connection without launching aol? Is there any way for me to simply bypass all of this with firefox as my main browser, I have tried the whole dial up with my screen name and password but it connects me to explorer and msn. Any more help with this I would truly appreciate, I want to keep aol as the isp but not use IE as the main browser.
Thanks in advance for any advice. k.

You have just asked a question of a user who last visited this forum nearly 4 years ago! I think it's highly unlikely you will get an answer. If you have a problem with AOL I would suggest you create a new post and ask your question direct.
